• LA G3

Yngwie opened and played good stuff, luickily he had no singer with him so he played mostly old stuff. Still has great chops, very impressive. Unfortunately his sound sucked and he only had 45 minutes and screwed around making noise for the amount of time he could have played a couple more songs,
Vai was second and had great sound and his playing was pretty amazing as well, but he too wasted alot of time screwing around (licking his guitar, blowing on it etc.)Its amazing to me that with all the great playing the crowd reacted the most to him licking his guitar
I didnt even care about Satriani but when he came out and played it was really good. I guess hes more humble than the other 2 cause he came out and mainly stuck mto playing SONGS. Very cool show, he played great. Very impressive.
Yngwie owned the Jam part of the show and what was surprising is he played some really cool bluesy licks, although never for very long and he'd go back to doing his thing.
Very cool show.
I hope some day theyll do one with Jeff Beck and Uli Roth

Hey Blindmuddy,

Sounds like it was a good show, Vai will never get Uli Roth, and Jeff Beck would just plain out class everybody else.

I've seen Yngwie twice, and both times the sound setup was terrible. Last time he was so mad he threw his drink and apologized to us for the "sh*&y sound and yelled at the club owner as well. I'm surprised he took it so well, he's probably getting used to it. I myself get sick of the first acts sounding bad because the soundguys are LAZY and don't take the time to do a proper soundcheck for all the bands.

Too bad, IMHO Yngwie is the best guitarist of the three, Vai plays with his whammy and effects too much (not to mention those other antics) and Satch jumps around to much in style, not in good way like Larry Carlton. They shoud've made it G4 and included Tony MacAlpine, since he's there anyway.

Re: LA G3

Actually, it's Satch who puts together the G3 shows, from what I understand--it was his concept to begin with.

Also, Uli Roth was the third guy on the European G3 tour a couple of years ago. Much of his recent Transcendental Sky Guitar album is taken from recordings of those shows. I'm not sure the last time he played N. America, though.

As far as the Satch/Yngwie/Vai comparison goes, here's how I'd rate them:

Yngwie: Best picking technique of the three, but his playing is very predictable and his writing has stagnated since the Trilogy album.

Vai: Best overall player of the three. Occasionally gets a little too showy, perhaps.

Satch: Best writer of the three. Also, maybe surprisingly, the best improviser, as well. I saw a video of him and Vai backstage (last year, I think), trading improvised solos over some basic chord progressions the way they used to do together as boys on Long Island--and Satch absolutely blew Vai away. Satch is an amazing improviser; his licks come out sounding as if he'd spent a bunch of time writing them, and he almost never repeats himself. Vai has more technique, but his improvisation tends to fall back into certain pet licks or phrases more often. Of course, Satch spent a number of years studying with jazz pianist Lennie Tristano, so you would expect his improvisational skills to be pretty high.

WOW Pro Fusion you nailed it I agree 100% and yes G3 is Satch's child not Via's. Now I truly agree I think that Yngwie is amazing as a player but his playing does little for me. Vai I love but Satch seems more grounded overall. Anyway you really did nail it IMO

Re: LA G3

Thanks! These three are all huge influences on me--I'm still amazed I'll get to see them on stage together in a few days. I've spent years listening to their work and analyzing their techniques, even though I've never actually learned their material.

Satch was probably the biggest influence on me. Surfing with the Alien changed my musical life, basically. Yngwie blew me away a few years before that, but I eventually got tired of his posing and his constant strange need to attempt to recreate Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. I still listen to his newer stuff, but not with the enthusiasm I had over "Rising Force" and "Marching Out".

When I listen to Vai, I'm always struck by how well he absorbed Frank Zappa's musical idiom. And I'm a huge Zappa fan, so I guess it's natural I'd be a Vai fan, even if he wasn't such an amazing player.

I agree with all the above. I can't believe how similar our views on all three are. It must be a JCF thing...

Re: LA G3

I agree completely. Vai has some great chops and takes the guitar to a different level but that's probably due to his Zappa influence. Satch is awsome and much more creative musically than the other two. Much more musical in his aproach.
Yngwie shreds like nobody else but all his riffs sound the same after a while. Vai just gets out there a little to far too keep my attention for too long. Although when he's on he's on and incredable.

Yep, have to agree with everyone aswell

Yingweee, blinding stuff that made me want to play fast about the time of " Trilogy ", ultimately sends me to sleep these days.....

Vai, another technical Wizz but with more variety than YJM, love stuff like " The Blood and the Tears " etc, can't watch him live, his facial expressions and the way he runs his hands thru his hair make me laugh too much

Satch, this is THE man, when i watch the "Live in SF " DVD i always reach for the guitar and start playing + he's so much more " Cool " than the other two, and for me a better player. Shame he plays those dodgy Ivebeenhads, would be very very nice to see him with an SL2H

You guys are sooo lucky......G3 to England is what i say!

I'll be seeing Symphony X on that tour, though I think it's on Nov. 21 at Jaxx in Springfield, VA. Michael Romeo made a solo album a few years back called The Dark Chapter, which is a perfect example of what Yngwie SHOULD be doing...

I think I've seen every one of the G3 tours of N. America, though didn't they tour the USA with Robert Fripp opening once? Perhaps that was Europe, but I missed that one either way. The first G3 tour with Vai/Satch/Eric Johnson was out of this world. Eric Johnson is such a 'pure' player--he's absolutely amazing, in my opinion. Though he uses too damn much reverb onstage.
