Man, I'm downloading the stuff right now, have 4 songs and I'm not impressed at all. It all sounds boring, mellow and overly drawn out. Maybe I just got the 4 worst songs on the CD, still downloading.

DT is GREAT.
I have been to many shows and they always Rock.
I have heard several songs off the new album.
I would say GREAT once again because they are not repeating what they have been doing and on this album, John Petrucci is using Mesa Road King Amp exclusively(not MKIIC+) but still sounds great.

So it sounds much heavier than other albums.

I Can't wait to buy the CD and ofcourse, the 2004 tour.

Got 2 more songs that sound better. I'll withold judgement until listening to the whole thing a few times.

Very, very diverse CD. Some dark stuff, some detuned stuff, some really boring mellow stuff. Quite a mix.

Dream Theater - Train of Thought

1) Petrucci and Vai seem to have spent some time together on the G3 tour...
2) This Dying Soul - The return of themes from the 6DOIT
3) Overall, this has to be the heaviest Dream Theater album so far, with the exception of maybe Awake.
4) I'm detecting an overall "old" Metallica influence, specifically on This Dying Soul where there are parts reminiscent of "Blackened"

So, you guys,I haven't boughtthe new CD yet buta question, which DT album do you like most?

Me? "AWAKE"
Great songs and production. The guitartone there is amazing and James voice is the best on that album.

Of course, "Images and Words" Rules but I like the direction of "Awake" a lot. My favorite of all time.

Re: Dream Theater - Train of Thought

as i said earlier: metropolis part 2, followed by a change of seasons. awake is pretty cool, too, but i like the more straight-on sound on metropolis2 better than the more experimental stuff on awake (think 6:00 . great song, but the sounds are quite....progressive? )

i also have to correct myself: i said the lead of trial of tears is my favourite. i listened to it again a couple of times and i think the lie solo is better.

by the way: listen to this dying soul at around 7.00 minutes. the vocal melody reminds me A LOT of metallicas blackened (verse). beside the effects on the vocals this part sounds exactly like blackened....he dudes, stop copying! same thing on honor thy father, the bass line during the first verse is almost the same as the line under the keyboard solo of home.
talking about honor thy father....rap vocals on a dt album...straaaaaaaaaaaange

fragle

edit: damn, i should read more precisely. the blackened influence has already be mentioned :/

Re: Dream Theater - Train of Thought

My favorite Dream Theater Albums:
1) Awake
2) Images and Words
3) Scenes From A Memory

I like a lot of B-sides too. There's a song on the single for Lie called To Live Forever, it's a great song. Then on the 5 Years in a Livetime video, there is a song called Cover My Eyes. There is a studio version, but he Acoustic version is just excellent.

Oh! Talking about the B-sides.They have some great stuff there.
How about "Eve"? Great Petrucci soloing.
Also the early version of Burning my soul/Hell's Kitchen thatis not on the CD.

They have great fan club CDs they released and all cool.
I have about 50 shows on CDs from all the tours DT did.
My favorite is from Change of seasons era and the tour before they released the FII.

My Favs:

1. Awake
2. When Dream and Day Unite
3. Images & Words

Everything since Moore left has not been my cup 'o tea.

It's cool to hear the John is using the Road King... I love mine, and it sounds great recorded.
...that the play is the tragedy, "Man"

I am so glad to find more people like "Awake".
I love that Album.

Kevin Moore on that album, very dark but real cool.In my opinion, Kevin with DT was better than Jordan.
Jordan rips but I really think he was better with LT but not with DT.

OK, I've downloaded the whole new CD and listened to it twice now. I'm sorry but this CD does nothing for me. I can't find one single song that I'd call excellent. Half of it is mellow and totally boring. The CD only has 7 songs and of the 7 I'd say that only 3 are even worth listening too.

For huge Dream Theater fans only.
