Re: Dream Theater - Train of Thought

I think I like the album...my younger brother doesn't like it too much because it's so heavy...if you aren't into metal the album is a little much, it's definitely heavier than Images and Words and those albums, which my brother likes. The vocals are really cool...I'm wondering where the keyboards are in some of the songs...and the rap vocals are strange. I really like the mellow grooves and all, though, mellow albums are great stuff. I bought it the day it was released, and I haven't stopped listening to it yet...but I did buy 8 other new albums...so I may soon change over...

Cheers,
Nick

I read something with DT a few years back, and they said Charlie was a singer in a wedding band.

Eh, I like LaBrie a lot, but he seems a little whiney and like he's straining himself at times.

to me charlie sounds like someone who's nuts have been ripped off
labrie is a bit whiney, thats right (listen to take the time, those uuuuuuuuhhhhhhhh ooooooooohhh parts ), but his voice doesnt hurt my ears like charlies ^^

talkin bout leads: most of the leads on TOT are just shred...i mean, the under a glass moon solo was shred, too, but it had something thats missed in 90% of the new leads: melody
when they follow this path (harder, faster, less melody) then the next DT album will propably sound like a slayer album *lol*

I agree. Some of these fast playing of Petrucci lately,They are more like exercise licks.
"I can do this, how about this and that".
Under Glass? In my opinion, these licks in that solo are ripped off of others.
I hear Vai,Brad Gillis,Nuno,Morse and so on.
I am a huge fan of Petrucci and DT but never liked that solo.
Too much showoff there and almost embarranced me hearing licks of others.

I have been meaning to start something about this for the past couple of days, but have been too busy. Lo and behold thirty some odd people have gotten to it before me. Dream Theater is my favorite band, bar none. The new album is amazing, in my opinion. I like the different feel (heavier) and I think it is a nice change of direction. Every time I listen to Petrucci's solos my mouth just drops. As far as my favorite DT album, I can't say. I go through moods. It was Images and Words for a while, then Awake. Metropolis Part II is my favorite "road trip" CD, plus the live albums. My wife and I together have three cars and at all times there is a DT CD in each one of them. Can't say anything bad about them.

Well I just got my copy yesterday and I really like it! It's growing on me the more I listen to it. Makes me wanna go out and get a 7 string!LOL! As far as faves go ,Scenes is probably my favorite followed by Awake. All the others probably are even scores. I personally haven't heard a bad one yet ,although I don't care for the vocals on When Dream and Day Unite. Not that he's a bad vocalist I just don't think he fits as good as Labrie does with the other guys.

The supposed *rap vocals* are LaBrie's distorted voice singing short words quickly in sync with a quick beat. I guess Slayer has rap vocals too

Gary Moore not rocking again? Am I missing something here?
Check his new live album.
I have been his fan for over 20years and He has been rocking out lately.

OK, I'll admit it... I used to listen to 311 and Shootyz Groove back in the day, so maybe I'm a little more tolerant of the Rap/Rock stuff. But I still can't see how anyone can view anything on the new DT album as hip-hop...

I've listened to almost the whole CD and it's amazing. Dark and heavy. I love it. Rap vocals? I don't think so.

I don't know why people complain about Dream Theater shredding or not holding down a groove. They are a very experimental band that loves to fart around. They're not gonna get simpler or less shreddy. Deal with it. Just like Gary Moore will never rock again, Yngwie will never get skinny, Jannick will never learn to play guitar...

I like the Metallica references on some of the songs as well.
