this guy is starting to get picky seems like JP did not want to be seen (yeah, break all grammar rules ) with a cheap ibanez, so he changed to EBMM, and now it seems like he thinks EBMM isnt expensive enough
prs are great guitars, but expensive as hell. great playability due to the neck...not as thick as gibson, but not so weird thin like ibanez.

to this guy above who says slayer has rap vocals, too: when you say this then you are NOT talking about the THRASH METAL band slayer. you talk about this wimpy almost nu-metal band that claims to be slayer. i'm talking about the last ~3 albums. with some little exeptions (war ensemble for example) slayer stopped playing metal after reign in blood. the new album is pure ****, screaming all the time because its "EVIL", tuning down to make the sound more muddy in order to make the kids that hear korn etc. buying their album.....kill 'em all

RAP?!?!?

I thought the first line(Mike singing?) of "Take the time" and some part of "Surrounded"were the Rap.

Kevin Moore on that album, very dark but real cool.In my opinion, Kevin with DT was better than Jordan.
Jordan rips but I really think he was better with LT but not with DT.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I agree totally. I am a definite Moore fan over the other keymen they've had by far. They haven't quite been at the same level since he left.

i think its more funk than jazz pretty tough song to play, especially the guitar/keyboard part. thats where JP shows what he is capable of, i mean ´this harmony part is full of string skipping, some little arpeggios and played at a nice speed, but the difficulcy is to play it in sync. with the keys, especially live. a hell of a tune, really.

well, i really dont think that slayer is (with some little exeptions) any good since 1988. the best album is reign in blood, sure. south of heaven has some good tunes on it, but on every album that followed were less good songs. and now its 2003 and slayer made an album (god hates us all, yeah i know it was 2001) WITHOUT any good songs.
here is a quote from kerry king:
"do you have nightmares about jeffrey dahmer?
i have nightmares about metallica!"
i dont now exactly when he said this, but nowadays i would laugh and say "guys, look at yourself. your music is almost as ****ty as metallica's"

fragle

edit: yeah, moore was the perfect keyboarder for DT. technically, jordan is way better than kevin, but he doesnt have his feeling. example: space dye vest. kevin? great job done! but i just cannot imagine jordan playing this live.
what do you guys think about derek sherinian? i think he played some cool things (think just let me breathe or lines in the sand) but his sound (especially live, listen to once in a livetime) is cruel.

Thanks for clearing that up about Slayer not being metal anymore. For a second there, I thought they were. But now they're not. Whew! Time to burn my Slayer CDs.

I've heard the promises
I've seen the mistakes
I've had my fair share of tough breaks
I need a new voice, a new law, a new way
Take the time, reevaluate
It's time to pick up the pieces,

That has a wicked jazz groove underneath with the bass and all...more skat or something like that than anything...not rap.

> I've had the cd for almost a week now,and am still speechless, same as I was after listening to Images,Awake, and every other cd they have ever put out, including the bootlegs. I've been a huge music fan in general since I was 6 or 7,and have never heard a band that even comes close, and doubt I ever will. I am with whoever suggested that they re-record WDADU with James,or at least remaster it,giving the guitar parts a more prominent role. My only complaint about them is that most of their cds sound like crap unless you are able to really tweak your EQ to it,but then you need a different EQ preset for everything else. Tommy D.

It always takes several listens to abosrb DT, but my initial impression is that TOT sounds more like an angry metal band with major chops than the more progressive sound from their earlier work. There is lots of noise but not as many quiet moments to balance it out---it's a very exhaustive listen to me. DT is always complex, but not usually exhaustive for me to listen to. The playing is, of course, top notch. Petrucci has some really cool neck position leads especially.

I think the lack of good keyboards is a MAJOR loss. They are mostly buried in the mix and not as cool as Kevin Moore's playing either. It is a stunning album, and the 7-string cuts much better than before, but overall I am not sensing much magic from it like the first time I heard Images or Awake, it's more like a technical excercise. I am going to keep on listening, maybe it's just too much to take at once. I do like the production of the album though, even though it could use more keyboards for atmostphere. Never thought I would hear myself say that, LOL!

Re: Dream Theater - Train of Thought

Enigma, it has taken me quite a few listens to get my ears totally wrapped around Train of Thought, but I really appreciate it now, as well as the direction the band have decided to go. I agree that the relative lack of keyboards on ToT was a problem at first, but the keyboards in DT haven't been that great since Kevin was in the band--he's nowhere near as technically gifted as either Derek or Jordan, but his keyboard parts added a lot more to the music, in my opinion--something of an avant-garde edge, rather than just pads and solos.

At least the new direction rocks a lot more than most of Six Degrees, which I grew tired of rather quickly.

One other good thing about ToT--you can actually discern John Myung's bass-playing for once!! Once Petrucci went for the heavily scooped sound on Images and Words, Myung seemed to disappear in the mix. Check out the first album to hear how great Myung can be when not buried in the mix.
