See but that is what drives me crazy, groups like Korn and Limp just didnt play on the lower 3 strings, there was more to it, but because there was rap involved most people down played it. I find nu metal to be some of the heaviest (guitar riff anyway) sounding music. That wall of sound just sounds mean and thick.
As to blaming nu metal for killing the solo, you cant even go there, that would be the grunge scene and the fact that 80's metal bands just burnt it out.
I am glad you listen to just more then speed speed speed. There is so much music out there, alot i dont like, but i dont feel the need to put it down, all music as some value to someone.
I am 36, i grew up in the 80's, i was old enough to enjoy it, but still to young to actualy be a major part of it, by the time I was old enough to move to LA and try to live the dream, the metal dream was starting to die and my music taste started to change.
As to Nu Metal, I liked it, but with any music it got old fast, i liked the pioneering groups such as Limp and Korn, but then with any style of music you had just to many made up groups trying to streal the spotlight. I dont really put Creed in the Nu Metal crowd, they are hard to place though, more of just a regular metal with alot of riffs.
Originally posted by Guitardude86 View PostWhoow.. Did you think I'm one those guys who listen to music for speeds sake? That was never my intention, quite the opposite actually
Speed is something you can work on, if you have the dedication you'll get there one day sooner or later if you work hard enough.. Soul on the other hand, or "feel".. You know that's gotta come from the heart. You don't learn that.. It comes natural, you just got to let it flow.
If I listen to speed for speed's sake why would I listen to the blues at all?
I wouldn't understand how to appreciate it.. Sabbath and Led Zeppelin and Rush, Ten Years After, Cream, Santana and all of those 60's and 70's players aren't the fastest players around are they? If I was about speed or shred for shreds sake why do I like these bands?
Sure, speed can make your playing interesting, but only to a certain extent..
Sorry if I made you think I was a "speed-freak" for putting down two of the most popular nu-metal bands.. Which is a genre that in my opinion were part of making kids think guitarsoloing is not cool.. Because they didn't incorporate this into their songs.. Tricking kids into thinking you should only use the 3 lowest strings on the guitar, and detune them, preferrably play this way on a 7-stringed guitar (thanks Korn).. Include a DJ, wear baggy clothes and rap, and we've got Linkin Park to..
Forget it, whatever I say can and will be used against me at this point.
I don't like nu-metal, and I even grew up with it, I'm 20 now lol.. It did nothing for me. I grew up listening to my dad's collection, mainly 60's and 70's music, and some 80's to obviously.. Noone ever told me "Hey, listen to this, this is what's cool." Shit, my dad didn't even want me to touch his collection, he was to worried about his LP's getting scratched hehe..
Sooo what have we learned here? Nothing really, I'm just one of those guys who happen to not like nu-metal. But a speed-freak? I don't know about that If I was I'd get comments on it from my friends. And I certainly haven't heard anyone call me a "fast player" yet.. If I wanted to hear that I'd practise and get my speed up to that level.. I've been playing more or less since I was 14.. If speed was all I was about I'm sure I could get pretty fast in a period of 6 years if I wanted to, no?

Bill I am not even gonna start you, we have butted heads over this subject many times in the past. I know your style of music, i use to be the same way, any metal i could get my hands on i would, including Nu Metal, i loved it all, heavy guitar, fast guitar, as long as it had distortion I loved it. My only thing was, if i didnt like the singer I just couldnt get into the band.
Now as i get older i find myself alot more selective. A group really has to speak to me, have something special, and just having two guitar players that shred like crazy, a singer that screams like he is getting slammed in the ass just does not do it for me. Dont get me wrong though, I do love certain screamers, but i am very selective on the vocals, always have been always will be.
Bill I am really glad you know what makes you happy, and you and I have come to agreement, you dont really slam the groups i listen too and Vice versa here. Who knows maybe someday your tastes will mature a little more too, or maybe not.

Anyone can like whatever they want..my wife likes watching Dr. Phil..but I'm not stopping her..even tho I call him a dick..
But,
Metal never got "old" for me..my dad thought it was a faze back in '78..but I proved him dead wrong..
My dad and I were just talking about this last week..He said.. "Yep, that wasn't any fucking faze, when I bought your first guitar"..I said, "no dad, It's my life,.. it's how I look, act, speak,feel..its who I am"..then I thanked him for turning me onto Black Sabbath when I was a tot..
Metal and I are a marriage made in Hell..'till death do us part!!

Not true at all, putting pantara out of this for now, because they were there all through the 90's, going into the 90's you still had the groups from the 80's, yeah they werent as popular but they were still there and releasing albums and still seling some up till around 93.
Then from 93ish to around 95ish not much metal at all, all underground, but then mid 90's Korn, Limp (yeah nu metal) started to catch a little fire, or i should say started to hit the main stream, i think around 97 is when it really started getting popular, by 1999 it was full blown all over the place. And you can bitch as much as you want, but if it wasnt for nu metal and ozzy, well metal would still be way underground.
Nu metal was becoming the big thing, and ozzy grabbed it by the horns, started his little ozzfest side project and grabbed all those bands and it caught on like wildfire.
But then like all music, to many crappy wanna be bands started coming up and people got sick of nu metal and started looking for another metal, and that leaves us to where we are today.
Now you have groups like triv, and avenged bringing back the soloing to the mainstream, you can hate them, but i would rather see them on top then justin or 50 cent.
Originally posted by VitaminG View PostI'm not sure how old you are, but were you listening to metal in the 90s? There was almost no metal in the mainstream. Check the guitar mags of the period - it's all Creed, Matchbox20, Third Eye Blind.
good metal was almost entirely underground. And a hell of a lot of kiddies were turned on to hip hop, country, etc. by the popular media instead. But guess what? Metal didn't die, otherwise you wouldn't be listening to Trivium today. Mainstream acceptance and airplay on radio & MTV isn't what makes metal thrive. It's the hardcore fans that keep it going, and they don't need to see metal in the Top40 to find out about a hot new band.

I can feel you Bill, i mean i still like heavy music, alot of what i listen to are screamo groups that have a heavy influence from the 80's, such groups as thrice, chiodos and coheed. All these groups play heavy and alot of riffs with soloing.
I also love listening to the shit i grew up on from all era's. But at the same time i also love Indie/EMO and screamo, so basicaly i just love music, but i do tend to enjoy the heavier stuff always.

Siggy's said alot of stuff that stands tall here, as have most people in the thread. I certainly have varied tastes in music aswell, I dont think thats what this is about though. I thought it was just gonna be a quick bash on the band and move on
If anyone needs more ammo I dont like iron maiden, bathory, or the rolling stones either, doesnt make them any less significant and massive! Ok a miniscule bit less sure. But its just not to taste man, thats all it is (hence bills strawberry ice cream comment loved it....except that flavour sucks man! )
Alot of what bill posted from youtube is awesome, but half of it is shit....to ME! I can still see how people love it, its just not my strawberry ice cream man, I prefer jaffa! We both obviously worship Dime and Loomis, but I'm a quality over quantity kinda guy. Bill is a horder
Different strokes!
Theres also the parallel hypocrisy of the rap argument, if your gonna belittle any criticism against a band, you cannot go and turn around on an entire genre/style in a similar fasion. Some people call some paintings art and I cant see it, same with some people and rap.
All in all, me not liking trivium at all is NOT me saying I dont like anyone who does. Its just my opinion on a topic. I'm sure theres alot of stuff I like that'd get berated here. Its good that theres stock on both sides to support each and every philosophical argument though. I cant imagine how this would turn out on most internet forums. But I do know this, none of them would like Jackson/Charvels as much
Anyways, thanks to this thread, I'm convinced I need to learn heaps more about Paul Gilbert and his body of work. I consider that a win!

My head's constantly in blast beats and double kicks with a alot of fast, complex stuff going on..ala Coroner,Death,Atheist,Nevermore,At The Gates,Exodus,Testament,Arch Enemy and trying to write my own shit along those lines..MOST people don't like my stuff,..but the ones that do are very loyal, ..like a cult..
To be honest the kids do the same thing at a Thrice as they do at a Exodus show..stage diviin', mosh pit..
I can't digest Rap tho..it just won't go down, I'll choke... ANYTHING that remotely sounds like Rap, makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up instantly..like nails on a chalkboard really..and puts me in a KILL mode, I just go into the red and break into a cold sweat with nausea..I'm wired like that..
I was submerged into that whole lifestyle..for 13 years as a ghetto cop..it wasn't good times for me!!
I had to run home to Metal to wash all the Rap off me..I'm soooooo serious!!:ROTF:"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
