  • E when your ready to thrown down..let me spank some wood for ya..

Norton..I don't know what NM makes now..but 10 years ago..we would more than double their pay at the same venues....pretty sad really..they were lucky to grab 500 bucks a gig..and nobody was there..I remeber sitting with Jeff, bored out of his mind in a empty bar, at a table ..just peeling the label off his beer..I was tellin' him "dude, you're the shit man!!!"..he just kept sayin'.."Bill, you're nuts"..I just kept telling him , "dude you're as good as anyone, you just keep it up man"..it finally paid off, but not as much as I hoped for..I'm still waiting for them to hit it "big"..at least some airplay..they have songs that could be on the radio..IMO!

My VH Trib played one place back in '97 The Cove in Geneva..and there was 1000+ people there..Iced Earth played the night before..I saw the flyer and thought..."Fuck , I loved this band"..and not even 50 people showed up..metal wasn't a big deal just a few years ago..it just came back into the mainstream in the last 2-3 years.

John and I went to see Joe Stump in 2001..Joe drove far to the venue in the winter , then back home.. there was 5 people there, including John and I..but we got to talkin' to him, great guy..but he put on a show..like if there was 5000 people there...He blazed..but I felt bad for the guy.

and that kid rules man.. i just hope it's not a fad for those kind of kids.. you know.. i hope they actualy make something out of it and not just leave it after they finish college. there's too many like that. i know a couple personaly, that are IMMENSE players, that play circles around a lot of todays "top" stars, but they dont use that talent to make something out of it. those are the good kind of kids. the ones that try to be some generic metal core band, and are ignorant of other kinds of music are just posers. we dont need posers, we need real talented players (like the kid you posted) to go out and shred our faces off.

Yeah, There is thousands of kids out there shredding my ass under the table..and I kept up with it all these years..good for them. Yeah, I hope they do something with it to..some will, some won't..

I knew guys back in '95 that were embarrased to show me a sweep arpeggio..this guy used to shred in a Journey tribute band..and when I would go to the store he worked at I'd always say "hey man, shred"..he would always blush and say .."I don't do that anymore", he was wearing old sweaters and looking all "grungy"..I was like dude, you butsed your ass getting this good..now fuggin' shred!!"..he had to look to see if anyone was in earshot in the music store he worked at before he could shred for me, when he did I noticed he was losing his edge..he was getting sloppy..I thought that was sad..I'll never forget that. He was embarrased of his abilities that he worked hard for because people no longer percieved it at "cool"..

          • E Sent this to me..I always thought Billy Sheehan was very good but a tad overrated..I even gave him a "nod" in my own live solo..as well as Stu Hamm.

I never knew or heard Billy slap until E sent me this..I never thought it was his style..he never did it in his solo..so I didn't think it was in his bag of tricks..so to speak..

This is good playing..very similiar to my style..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6c6zWpzlQk

I was surprised..I have a new found respect for Billy..

I know..did you ever see Billy do that..not I..not in Mr. Big, DLR , Talas..

That is something you just don't pick up over night..that takes some crazy woodsheding to a metranome, click or drummer to nail..I used to slap n' tap for hours to my Roland 505 drum machine..driving my parents nuts..

I'm not just a "horder" ..I'm a horder of major talent..I'm like a Mike Varney..I like to discover and surround myself with the best of the best..then share my knowledge and joy of those players and bands.

I'm a funk/jazz-fusion bassist and a metal guitarist. I just play what I percieve as "exciting" on both instruments..I didn't want to learn AC/DC , VH, Black Sabbath even Iron Maiden basslines..that got boring for me fast..so I turned to Funk-Jazz-fusion where the bassists were monsters..Tony Levin was my biggest influence..after seeing him play with King Crimson on a Chapman stick..I was young, I couldn't find or afford a Chapman..so I just did what he did on the bass..and I wasn't alon shortly afterwards I discoverd Stu Hamm, Jeff Berlin, Victor Wooten, Michael Manring, John Pattitucci..that was my language..that spoke to me

On guitar..Eddie made it very exciting..then came Randy, George and all the Shrapnel guys..with all their crazy speed and tricks..that is what I loved about guitar...it's not all about SPEED..The great Kat is fast..I don't like that..Vinnie Vincent was fast on his first release, all those solos seem to sound the same and didn't seem to fit the song.. after learning he speed up those solos actually explains that..for me it must be a balance of speed and substance..I'm from the EVH school of shred..I love the Yngwie influenced guys just as much, my bro John is more like that, where I'm more reckless..like Page and what Ed called "falling down the stairs and landing on your feet"..that's me!!

That stuff never went away in the underground it was always there ..but it never promoted, not anywhere...other than metal mags and mail order sites. The players that are getting somewhat known now like Mike Romeo, Chris Broderick, Jeff Loomis, Loftad, Laiho, Latava, The Amotts, Ralph Santolla, Magnus Karlsson, Glen Drover, Tom Englund and so on..have been at it for VERY long time, and never bend with the trend..they're just LUCKY that it's somewhat popular again..so they're getting some recognition. Now, most guys know these players..when Johh introduced me to the JCF in 2002..just a small portion of members was mentioning these guys..that's how my thread intially started by my friends "Bill's Home"..it was a place where like-minded metal/shredders discussed this stuff, then the thread just took a silly turn..go figure...That's actually my third thread started by Jack and Rich..one was lost in a JCF format change and one was deleted because some dick came over there to provoke me and I went off on him..

In 2002..most threads were about players I've listened to 15-20 years ago..all the standard 80's guys..which is cool..just a few knew there was more going on other than these establshed players..because shredding never stopped it was still going very strong in underground metal. I wasn't popular at all..METALHEADS are the most loyal music fans on the planet IMO.. and you'll find most of them somewhere on the pages of that thread!!!

we all know who George Lynch, Warren Dimartini, Eric Johnson, Satch, Vai, Ed and Randy are, yes I love them , yes they are awesome..MY contribution whether you like it or not was that there is more players in the game..and most of you older members prolly heard about Jeff Loomis and the like from me..because just like all of you..I always talk about MY favorite bands and players.

Because I am a HORDER of all things shred!

Yes, he is Joe..I just waiting to see if he was part of Bibz "shit" list..

Bibz said HALF of what I posted is "shit" to him..that means 50%..so who is in that 50%..could it be Mike Romeo..maybe it's that unknown teenager in his bedroom..I dunno..I wanna know

Actually not really..I think Jeff and Warrel are pretty full on NM..like I said Tim had to bail..that prolly wouldn't be the case today..

Well, just like when Barlow left Iced Earth and became a cop..that prolly wouldn't happened today either..they were really getting a pretty good following and about to break-thru when he bailed and Ripper joined them.

but who knew metal was going to be cool again after being MIA for 15 years

                            • Haven't heard the band but sounds like they might be similar to All That Remains who I like. And the guys in All That Remains are terrific players. Mixing vocals doesn't bother me. 3 Inches of Blood, Opeth, Orphaned Land and many others do it.

Yeah, Phantom's Opera. Jeez, that was a long time ago. I can't even remember if the band was called that then. I remember his old singer, Coleman Brice, was kind of a dick and my drummer friend in a rival band used to beat him up. LOL
