Re: Favourite Guitar Tone

I agree with a lot of the replies, even though some included more than your top three.

Only one post included the most underrated guitarist of all time:

Criss Oliva - R.I.P.

Savatage's first guitarist for those that do not know.

Re: Favourite Guitar Tone

Hmmm...this is a tough one. My favorite metal tones, in no particular order:

LaRocque/Denner - King Diamond's "Abagail"

Piercy/Altus - Heathen's "Victims of Deception"

Amott/Steer - Carcass' "Heartwork"

Schaffer/Tarnowski - Iced Earth's "Alive In Athens"

Tommy "T. Baron" Vetterli - Coroner's "Mental Vortex"

Petrozza/Tritze - Kreator's "Extreme Aggression"

Loomis/Calvert - Nevermore's "Dreaming Neon Black"

Eh, it's a start.

For non-metal, it Eric Johnson, hands down, although Stevie got some great tones...

Mike
Division - American Metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on Facebook.

One of my favourite tones at the moment has to be Vivian Campbells clean sound at the start of Whitesnakes "is this love". Such a perfect 80's chorus sound! Anybody else know what im talking about?

I didn't think Vivian Campbell played on that song. John Sykes played it on 1987, and Steve Vai played it on Slip Of The Tongue

1. Edward Van Halen - Van Halen I, Fair Warning (interesting how many people singled out these 2 albums as the pinnacle of tone - I agree 100%)

2. Zakk Wylde - Thunder Underground is a nice example

3. "Dimebag" Darrell/Pantera - I'll Cast a Shadow, from Reinventing the Steel, is stripped down & badass at its best

> No order here either.......

Stryper-Soldiers and To Hell.....those Mesas just sing.

Pantera-Cowboys,reminded me of the first time I heard Van Halen, not tone wise, but his internal fire and conviction.

Dokken-just about all but Tooth And Nail especially,Lynch's tone is just about larger than life.

Van Halen-anything before 5150,especially I,II,and Fair Warning.

TNT-LeTekro is just as underrated as Shawn Lane was.

Boston-what can you say, they will still be playing Foreplay/Long Time on the radio 100 years from now.

Night Ranger,Gillis and Watson smoke, who cares if all Gillis can do is wank on the trem, the tone rules!

Ozzy, everything up to No Rest. I like Zakk a lot,but to me like everything sounded like it was recorded in a can.

Vai-Blue Powder, and all of Eat 'Em And Smile

Satch-it's all good.

Eric Johnson-Cliffs Of Dover,unspeakably fluid.

There are probably 10-20 more, but these are the ones that really grab me. Tommy D.

I like most listed so far. Three that I don't belive anyone mentioned:
Stevie Blaze - Lillian Axe
Nadair DePriest's guitaist on Playa Del Rock
Vinnie Moore - solo stuff

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The only guitarist i know that played in Whitesnake studio ablum are Bernie Marsden, John Sykes, Micky Moody, Adrian Vandenberg, and Steve Vai.

And in the ablum "Whitesnake"(which the song "Is this love" is in), there were three guitarist Micky Moody, Adrian Vandenberg, and John Sykes. The ablum was release in 1987 which is also the same year when "Hysteria" is released. Therefore, i don't reckon Vivian can split himself into two to do both promotes at the same time.

Fong, Viv didn't join Def Lep til the early 90s...Steve Clarke was still with Def Lep when Hysteria was released I believe.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Hahaha!! Sorry my bad! Viv only started his career with Def Leppard in 1993 in the "Retro Active" Ablum. And before that, he is pretty much busy with Dio.

I thought John Sykes was the only guitarist on the 1987 album? Micky Moody was out by then. And Adrian Vandenberg didn't join until '87, after Sykes left. The album was recorded a couple of years before, but delays meant it wasn't released until Vivian & Adrian had joined the band, which is why they get to mime along to Sykes licks in the vids.
