Re: Iron Maiden

I personally don't mind Janick playing Adrian's original stuff. There are songs that Janick writes that he has NO solos in... for example, "The Mercenary", which he wrote, but it's Dave and Adrian playing the solos. I think it all boils down to whoever best represents and plays that particular part best.

There honesty isn't a Janick co-written song, or solo, that I couldn't do without. Seeing him live is embarrassing.

                  Re: Iron Maiden

I saw Maiden last night and they were great, but Janick was terrible - he seems like a nice guy and all, but he should stick to rhythm guitar - he solos suck and while he does throw himself around, his playing really suffers for it.
Mind you I bought a programme and there's a pic of Adrian's rack of guitars in the studio and it has 4 C/Js in it (white strat w blk pickgaurd, King V, Soloist and a Charvel Spectrum(!))....
                  Cheers

Vitamin G - there's not alot of point in scanning the pic - it's just a rack of stuff from the 10 from right front corner so you can only see the side, some of the face and neck and the headstocks - I worked out what the guitars were from what I knew he had and the vaguest view of the face of the guitar
Apparently there's a Maiden board from their site so someone there may have pics

I wouldn't recommend the Maiden board EXCEPT to see pictures. That place has seriously gone down the drain. Last time I was there, all I saw was arguments about which song is better, why Iced Earth sucks, how Rob Halford is gay, etc.

But if you DO find the pictures, link them back here, please and thank you!

                          Re: Iron Maiden

I'm not a fan of Janick's soloing either. He has had his moments though - the solos of Wasting Love and Blood Brothers are VERY memorable, melodic and well written.

However Janick's contribution on the last two albums is very significant. I've started hating most of Steve Harris' songwriting since the X-FACTOR. I'M FUCKING SICK OF THE ENDLESS QUIET INTROS WHERE THE GUITAR AND BASS JUST ARPEGGIATE THROUGH THE THREE NOTES OF POWER CHORDS.

It was interesting on No Prayer. Afraid To Shoot Strangers, also good. Fear Of The Dark, super. It seems like 80% of Maiden's songs since then contain that. We get the point Steve.

By the way, Adrian and Janick do together the leads of The Trooper and The Evil That Men Do. I think that's cool. It's no coincidence, as these are the only Smith solos that Gers actually played .. the rest he pretty much wanked on.

I do however like his stage presence. Nothin' wrong with a little showmanship.

So to conclude, he has good songwriting skills, excellent stage presence, crappy solos and tone.

PS: MONTSEGUR is the most deliciously old-school pure Maiden song since No Prayer. As hard as they try, none of the lame-o power metal crap bands can pull that shit off. Good bits written by Gers, no less!

No man...when I saw them Live last month he rocked

                            They all did

Adds alot to the stage show and i don't think the solos are bad.

Id also like to add that he when i saw him he never played one bum note, everything he played fitted well and sounded great. His tone is unique, i wouldnt call it bad, there are much worse tones that Janick Gers i can assure you. But i honestly think that all three guitarists sat down and dialed their gear together.

Adrian sounds muddiest, Dave is quite mid range and Janick seems to have the most highs in rhythm mode, and in solo tones, Adrian blows Janick and Dave out of the water!

The rhythm parts are often a mess. Maiden used to have such a tight, well-defined live sound but this is no longer the case.

He's in the band simply because he's a "great mate." When Adrian left, Steve needed a yes-man who would go along with anything and not rock the boat. Now, he's just a charity case. Maiden are probably in their final tour. Janick is just along for the ride.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Maidens live tone used to suck from what i remember, i saw them on the BNW tour and it was the best live tone i had heard from maiden. Its a little disappointing that Adrian has a smaller roll in the band, but he did walk out on them.

Back to Janick, if you listen to BNW and DOD, Janick has the most solos of any guitarist (thats a guess, i cant be bothered to count). Steve probably chooses what solos go on the records, and they probably all do a couple per song and the best gets picked. Thats suggests that Janicks solos are better than Adrians, as they tend to compete for the same "solo spot." Dave has the obligatory neck pickup lightning fast solo if its going

Also, Janick has written most of the best tracks on the 3 guitar albums (IMHO), from a writing point of view, Dave has the smallest and "worst" output. But they are all great players, why cant we leave them as it is?
