Re: Iron Maiden
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I would agree, but only since the 90s - with Gers. Compare Maiden Japan, LAD, Maiden England to Rock in Rio. There is no comparison. RIR is muddy and much less tight by comparison. ARLO/ARDO are a monument of how bad things got in the 90s. Individual concerts always very, but I don't think Maiden has sounded anywhere near as good since the SSOASS tour - and that includes my visits to the Ed Hunter & BNW tour. Three guitars continue to be unnecessary in the studio, and very difficult to manage live. And Adrian didn't walk out so much as being pushed by Steve.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Everyone doesn't perform a solo and then Steve picks and chooses. They work it out ahead of time and try to achieve solo parity. I don't think there's any question that Adrian has the best solos on the last 2 albums - Wicker Man, Fallen Angel, Wildest Dreams, Paschendale. Janick's are weak by comparison. Just check out his on Fallen Angel and OOTSP (more below).
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">What "best" songs are those? I don't think any co-written song by Gers on the last two albums will ever be considered a true "classic" Maiden song. Only one song from BNW co-written by Gers even became a single - Out of the Silent Planet. They had to cut his messy solo out of radio edit in order to get some play. That has NEVER happened before on ANY Maiden single.
Writing credits in Maiden have always been strange. You get a credit for the lyrics and general arrangement, but nothing ever for solos, bridges, harmonies, intros, outros, etc. Every song is a colloborative affair, yet Steve somehow ends up with the lion's share. Dave has always been short-changed in this department.

Back to Janick, if you listen to BNW and DOD, Janick has the most solos of any guitarist (thats a guess, i cant be bothered to count). Steve probably chooses what solos go on the records, and they probably all do a couple per song and the best gets picked. Thats suggests that Janicks solos are better than Adrians, as they tend to compete for the same "solo spot." Dave has the obligatory neck pickup lightning fast solo if its going.
Also, Janick has written most of the best tracks on the 3 guitar albums (IMHO), from a writing point of view, Dave has the smallest and "worst" output. But they are all great players, why cant we leave them as it is?
