<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I would agree, but only since the 90s - with Gers. Compare Maiden Japan, LAD, Maiden England to Rock in Rio. There is no comparison. RIR is muddy and much less tight by comparison. ARLO/ARDO are a monument of how bad things got in the 90s. Individual concerts always very, but I don't think Maiden has sounded anywhere near as good since the SSOASS tour - and that includes my visits to the Ed Hunter & BNW tour. Three guitars continue to be unnecessary in the studio, and very difficult to manage live. And Adrian didn't walk out so much as being pushed by Steve.

Back to Janick, if you listen to BNW and DOD, Janick has the most solos of any guitarist (thats a guess, i cant be bothered to count). Steve probably chooses what solos go on the records, and they probably all do a couple per song and the best gets picked. Thats suggests that Janicks solos are better than Adrians, as they tend to compete for the same "solo spot." Dave has the obligatory neck pickup lightning fast solo if its going.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Everyone doesn't perform a solo and then Steve picks and chooses. They work it out ahead of time and try to achieve solo parity. I don't think there's any question that Adrian has the best solos on the last 2 albums - Wicker Man, Fallen Angel, Wildest Dreams, Paschendale. Janick's are weak by comparison. Just check out his on Fallen Angel and OOTSP (more below).

Also, Janick has written most of the best tracks on the 3 guitar albums (IMHO), from a writing point of view, Dave has the smallest and "worst" output. But they are all great players, why cant we leave them as it is?
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">What "best" songs are those? I don't think any co-written song by Gers on the last two albums will ever be considered a true "classic" Maiden song. Only one song from BNW co-written by Gers even became a single - Out of the Silent Planet. They had to cut his messy solo out of radio edit in order to get some play. That has NEVER happened before on ANY Maiden single.

Writing credits in Maiden have always been strange. You get a credit for the lyrics and general arrangement, but nothing ever for solos, bridges, harmonies, intros, outros, etc. Every song is a colloborative affair, yet Steve somehow ends up with the lion's share. Dave has always been short-changed in this department.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I absolutely agree. If music is all about tension and release, then we should all be loving the tension of sitting thru Ger's sloppy disorganised solos, followed by the sweet release of a perfect Adrian Smith solo opus. I'm enjoying Dave's playing more than ever & Adrian's playing on the new album is SMOKIN'!!! He still has that ability to take what Dave (or the 'other' guy) has established and crank it up a notch. Great stuff.

And after being very excited at the prospect of a new live DVD, Live After Death is one of all-time my favourites and Adrian & Bruce are back, but it was disappointing to hear how muddy their live sound is now. I appreciate that Adrian is playing some songs in Drop D now, which adds a different flavour to the old arrangements, but it seems that the band has lost a lot of their old tightness.

Montseguer - Janick Gers song, classic maiden song. IMO the Best from the last 2 albums. I also really dig his solos from the past 2 records. Maybe i have bad note choice as well

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I didnt know this, is this the case for most bands? In that case it sucks, cos Adrian deserves many more solos than he got on BNW. I always assumed that only the best solos made records

Guys, I just bought the "Killers" and "Piece Of Mind" Enhanced CDs to celebrate my completion of all my finals for this semester. Gonna give each of them a few listens before I really comment, but it's gonna be hard to top "Somewhere In Time" for me. That album is absolutely stunning... soooooo many melodic Adrian solos with a wicked lead tone.

I dunno... the few songs that have me worried are "Quest For Fire" (just because I thought it kinda sucked when I first heard it a while ago) and "To Tame A Land" (because doesn't quite sound "right", as if it's going all out of key and everything, but I suppose that's one of the reasons why people like that song). Killers is one of my all-time favorites. It's not as immediately likeable as some of their others, but contains some really great guitar work. Check out the solo on Prodigal Son. I still play that one regularly.

Hey Todd,

I love that song. can you make me a tab of that?

Been meaning to learn it but I'm too lazy to figure out the entire thing. Took me 3 fucking hours to pick up Strange World with the solos and everything.
