Ed took from Hendrix, Beck, Page, Clapton, even Iommi and ect..it's just a natural progression..Ed was that progression...he set a benchmark!!

Three guys set the benchmarks..the trinity of inspiration is Hendrix, Eddie, and Yngwie..these THREE inspired more people to pick up the guitar than any other player..

Jeff Loomis is my inspiration for the last decade..but he wouldn't be if if didn't worship Kirk Hammet..who worshipped Ed..so..it's a snowball effect.

i dont like van halen as much, as i'm not the generation that was listening to the music at the time, but he wrote the book on shred. period, end of discussion. like or not like the guy, he IS rock.
there are TONS of better players today, than he was, in terms of knowledge and ability, but all are a copy of some degree, whether they acknowledge it or not, the roots start with ed. the thing with ed is, he started it and that is the reason, that he is a legend.

as for vai and the other big dogs saying that they suck compared to ed.. they say that out of a couple reasons.. NOT because they couldnt outplay him, but because of what he has done for rock/metal and to avoid being chewed up and ripped a new one, by all the Eddie Van Halenbees.

and for the record, if i see another DIY van halen replica guitar in my life, it will be a gajillion too many!

I hear ya..ummm, he's an true icon..he certainly made his mark..and well, he's trying to make a buck or MORE..

what he did 10 years ago on VH III was ..well..

I break out the old classics and enjoy those on occassion..those are a HUGE part of my life...as many others here.
