Moron? Wow, THAT really hurt........hehe. Hardly. I WAS talking about Van Halen, stupid. But Timmy-boy, and the rest of the lapdogs feel they need to jump to the aid of someone who don't know they exist. Let me tell you a few of my favorite albums:

    VH I
    VH II
    Women And Children First
    Fair Warning
    Diver Down

Yeah, they are Van Halen albums. Then Dave left the band, and took the balls with him. It's been over 20 years, and Eddie has not maintained his hold as a guitar "God". Those that care are the blind followers, and people who remember and long for the edgy, ballsy Van Halen. Not the crap of the last 2 decades plus.

Thanks for that final laugh. I think this has run it's course, though. I'll let "the girls" alone. They can pop their Motrin for the cramping, do their nails, and talk how totally "dreamy" Edward is.

Ed is a touchy issue with alot of folks. I pissed off my share of people when I bashed the guy. But my "bashing" was out more out of love for the dude..

I bash my own friend and family whenever I think they're fucking up..it's what I do.

Hopefully Ed can get it together and do well, that would be cool. I stopped waiting myself and moved on to other players for inspiration. There will always be a place in my heart for VH..he insred me first and many years after.

I commited many years of my life to Ed/VH..and it shows.

I agree with Bill. The personal insults are unnecessary.

I also agree with Racerx2K. There is no denying Ed's contribution to rock and to guitar playing. The guy was revolutionary and blew a lot of minds when he first came out. He rightly deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Jimi.

But to say that nobody can be better is flatout fanboyism. Bill stated earlier that Ed threw that ball and others picked it up and ran with it. Many other guitarists have taken what Ed started to another level and blown other people's minds with it.

I found it interesting that Tim mentioned Danny Gatton. Amazing guitarist and rightly should be mentioned as an innovator and an inspirational player. But did he satisfy your own criteria? Did he set the world on fire? I've only been able to hear his playing thanks to the internet. Never been able to find an album over here. In fact, it seems that no one outside of guitarists actually knows who he is.

All this "nutswinging" sounds a bit like a lot of older players when VH first came out. "Sure, he's good. But he's no Clapton."

EVH deserves all the praise that is heaped upon him. But that shouldn't diminish the accomplishments of the many guitarists that have been inspired by him. They're not all cheap copies of the master.

just like Mike once said, when SRV came out did it make B.B. King suck and shouldn't he learned all the new flashy licks to keep up with the new guys, NO WAY, B.B. King should sound just the way he is, that's what makes him great.
I don't want Ed to start with the ridiculous arpeggio olypics, I want Ed to sound like Ed not like another ridiculously boring shredder.

Once a guitar god, always a guitar god, no matter how sloppy you are, the impact is allready made and there's nothing that can change that.

Now talking about nutswinging. Many of you nutswing Loomis, it's cool, but he is not that great, he doesn't shake the whole world. Younger players nutswing a lot too....Many say that Paul Gilbert is beyond everything...I think Paul is a badass player but he keeps repeating the same lick he stoled from Al Di Meola in every friggin' solo. Also Steve Morse at his age was way more crazier than Paul ever will be, but that doesn't mean kids can't call Paul the greatest if they want to do that. I'm a fan of Paul too but I don't call him the greatest because he wasn't the revolutionair like Townshend, Page, Hendrix and Ed.
I don't don't call kids who think that Alexi Laiho is the best retards and little bitches even though I think Alexi is one of the most booring players I've ever heard in my life not to mention his shitty vibrato and tone.

IMO what makes the player GREAT is the impact he has made, not the posession of chops and up-dated sound. Yeah sure, Ed hasn't written anything decent for a long time and his chops aren't good either but it doesn't matter, the overall impact counts. I listen to old VH records all the time because these show the overall greatness of Ed. No matter how good the others are, another VH I would make the revolution again, but do you seriously belive somone is capable of doing it?

no one here has said that Eddie has to update his chops to be great. No one has second-guessed his greatness or questioned his impact on rock & guitarplaying.

But a bunch of folks have said that no one is a better player than he and no one will be. That's nutswinging.

Jimi so revolutionised rock guitar that everyone assumed that no other player would have such an impact on the instrument again. But then along came Ed. It could happen again.

so what's the formula for "being better than EVH" ?

it's impossible to say who is the best...there isn't
but I have yet to see reasonable arguments about things wich would make a random player to be better than Ed

there are only VERY subjective obinions.
My fav. player is Billy Gibbons, that does't mean he is better than Ed, Steve Vai is the best IN MY BOOK as far as overall skill and versality is concerned, that doesn't make him better than Ed either.

Who said that? I know it wasn't me 'cuz Eddie is far from my favorite player. I think there are plenty of better players.
