it's impossible to say who is the best...there isn't
but I have yet to see reasonable arguments about things wich would make a random player to be better than Ed

there are only VERY subjective obinions.
My fav. player is Billy Gibbons, that does't mean he is better than Ed, Steve Vai is the best IN MY BOOK as far as overall skill and versality is concerned, that doesn't make him better than Ed either.
you're absolutely correct - it is completely subjective. So how do we quantify it? And yet the statement was made, everyone sucks compared to EVH

Reading this thread reminds me of the kids on VH Links................

There is NO "better"..all GREAT players have something to say..

yes, once a guitar "god"..alway s a guitar "god"..Ed reached that status..so there shouldn't be anything left to say at this point if you think about it.

I met and discovered Jeff Loomis a long time ago in my neverending search of great players and music..He speaks a completley different languange than VH..but one that I understood immediately. He had to grow on others, and some people still don't know who he is and prolly never will..but he's been my main inspiration for quite some time...that's all that matters to me. Without Nevermore, I wouldn't have came up with some of my own music. So, Jeff and NM certainly means alot to me..without a doubt.

I'll be the first one to admit when Sammy joined the band, Van Halen ended for me. America's greatest Rock and roll issue ended and all the balls were gone from the band. Even the whole approach to the tunes changed for the worse from me. So if this is fact, and it is, how am I a ballswinger when all we've been trying to say is that Eddie Van Halen was more badass and psycho in his approach to the guitar out of anyone since Hendrix and made a whole bunch of beginners , experienced players, and already established rock stars start imitatig him. And if those are your favorite albums, then you're swinging just as much as anyone else defending a cat that once changed my life for the better and you can have all the arpeggios you want, after two songs of them they're a fukkin' headache and it must be removed for something that sounds good. song after song, VH can claim it. The original lineup that is, RacerX can certainly not by a long shot. I'm done ballswinging, I'm gonna have my girlfriend blow me and then I'm going to sleep, and Racerx will definitely not be on, BillzBub Hussies of Cleveland part 4 will be instead. I'll Headache you all in the morning. Thanks for keeping me young Eddie, I'm 42 on jan. 31st, but my girlfriend is in her late twenties, I owe part of that to you for making pick up a guitar and make we want to learn timeless tunes such as yours, and in turn helped me come up with plenty of my own. Quarter sticks are ready if anyone wants any-lol

knowing Tim he is always very sarcastic, he made his comment with humour but you started calling people names and stirring up shit,

as I said, I'm sure that Tim made that comment with little humour, it's pretty obvious don't ya think.
it's not like "you suck ass" it's more like "you are not as great and influental as Eddie"

                    • Eddie is a guitar god, and he's got a patent too!

Search and read the full text of patents from around the world with Google Patents, and find prior art in our index of non-patent literature.

Crap! How'd you find a video clip of me? Man, that's embarrassing. But since we're sharing. I did some digging and found a little clip of when you were working at Burger King.

Dude, do yourself a favor, think. I'm just messing with you. So the huge bright red "Comic" font didn't tip you off? The 2 people who made me want to pick up a guitar were EVH and Ace. No one else. I am just tired of EVHs crap. I want new songs and chops not re covered 5150s and over priced guitars. ED get over ya self and get clean and hook up with the real VH and make great tunes again.

                          • Ed will always be the benchmark as a rock guitar player for me. I can never hope to achieve in MY LIFETIME on the guitar what Ed had achieved at the ripe old age of 21. He put on vinyl the most explosive, searing, long reaching and influential album to hit the scene since "Are You Experienced" in '67. He could have walked away in 1978 and called it a career, his place in the history of rock guitar was set in stone. But no, he followed up once a year until 1984 with even more brilliance. Not only can Ed play like a motherfucker, but he can WRITE SONGS that people of all walks of life and all musical tastes can enjoy, rock out to, air guitar along with and sing the choruses. Ed wrote rock ANTHEMS. He is muscical genius, period.

I do enjoy the pre-Hagar era stuff more than post 1984, sure. However, when taken as a whole, Van Halen has always been a benchmark for rock and roll music.

I don't swing from Ed's sack. I appreciate the gift of incredibaly inspirational music that he has given me. For that reason, he is a hero to me...to ME. To you he may be a fool, and that is just fine.

Thank you Eddie Van Halen. You made me want to play guitar, one of the greatest joys in my life.

                            Mike
Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

                              • It's amazing to me how heated these debates about Sir Edward become.
The older guys here who were around in 1978 know what an impact his playing has made. There is no arguing that point.
If Jimi Hendrix was still alive today and he was a homeless washed out junkie would we be looking at him like so many look at Ed now?
God I hope not, his contributions shouldn't be ignored or overlooked either.
For someone to say "so and So is the Best" is completely subjective to the person saying it.
Fact of the matter is that Ed changed the way people play rock guitar. "Period".
Everyone else who followed in the rock/metal scene borrowed something from him, (and from Dave if you were a singer)
If they expanded on that "gift" and incorporated it into their own playing, well good for them.
Greg Howe is one of my all time favorite players. Listen to any of his later albums and you will not really hear Ed's playing, but he started out like many others as an Eddie Clone.
Shit listening to Ed sure changed the way I play (and look at playing).
But so has Satch,Vai,Howe, Loomis,Macalpine etc.
Ed's style and technique didn't continue to evolve into the malmsteen
sweep school of arppegios like so many others did.
Big fucking deal, does it make his contribution worth any less?

It's unfortunate that he was personally become a train wreck, but that
doesn't change the fact that between 1978-1985 there wasn't a single
metal/rock guitarist on the planet that wasn't studying in the University of
                                VH.
Everybody who plays metal has copped something from Ed.

Is he my favorite now? No.............. Is he one of my favorites? Of course he is.
If you put on an Early VH cd I still love every freaking second of what
I'm hearing. that will never change for me, regardless of what he becomes
                                in life now.

For someone new to come along and have the same impact he has had will be virtually impossible.
The internet has changed the music industry (much for the worse)
Record companies don't support their acts like they used to (unless you are catering to the Jessica Simpson crowd)
and a little thing called MTV has completely turned their back on the rock/metal scene.
Without MTV would we have ever heard of bands like Ratt, Winger,Dokken,Poison, etc????

there are tons of amazing gifted guitarists out there that the majority of people alive will never hear
because of the way the music industry is now.
We as musicians on the internet are always keeping an eye out for talent,
but for the general listener they are only going to get what the media and record companies spoon feed them (and is most profitable for them).
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?
