Opeth is great , they do amazing heavy tunes aswell as mellow stuff. Very epic songs but skillfully crafted , Now I love bands such as Dream Theater but their songs dont grabbed me like Opeth's do. I also love the phrasing and emotion they put into their solo's, rather then flashy shredding.

The older cd's are abit more raw and the production and recordings dont seem as polished. So I tend to lean more towards Deliverance, Damnation,Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries. These all are must haves IMO.
Although the song "Demon of the Fall" from My arms your Hearse is still one of their best asskickin alltime tracks to me.

They have a decent mix of heavy and mellow on most cd's except probably "Damnation", which is more laid back while it's counterpart "Deliverance" is more heavy.

You might want to try and find the newer collectors version of "Ghost Reveries" which comes with a bonus dvd of them recording in the studio, interviews and the extended music video of "The Grand Conjuration".

Hell, buy them all .These guys are such a talented refreshing group.

+1 to everything the guys have said. Just buy everything in their catalogue. Get the live DVD, Lamentations, too. There isn't a dog in the bunch.

Also get the re-issue of Ghost Reveries, it's got a DVD with the full album in 5.1 plus another documentary (about their future!) and the extended Conjuration video...

It's well worth it just for the DVD. Plus you also get "Soldier of Fortune" as a bonus on the CD.

Did you see 'em in Aus when they came over? I saw them in Melbourne. Absolutely magic!

Damnation is the best "Mellow" cd Ive ever heard/owned. I love it. Very moody, brilliant writing. It sets a perfect mood. They should have saved "Harvest" for this CD as that song fit the CD perfectly.

BTW. The Lamentations DVD is worth every penny as well!

LOL I also own the original and happened to see the reissue with the DVD not too long ago. I was cursing and debating on whether to buy it or not... wound up getting something else instead. Maybe I will eventually.
Meshuggah did the same thing with their "Nothing" CD. I guess I might have to get that reissue, too.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
