The reason...Gibson seems to be very good to their artists and they probably not only give him guitars but support him in other ways too...Not only do guitar companies give guitars but, may also help with tour costs...

[edit] As a matter of fact (now that I think of it)...It would seem Gibson is so good to their artists that a guy like Zakk CAN play other guitars...Thats pretty cool, I'd say.

someone like Zakk would be great, he has been around for a while and is popular among young players too.

I think it's cool if Jackson would give good endorsement deals to todays players...Drover, Loomis etc. But you still gotta have some big name.
Look at Nike, they gave good deals to a lot of athletes...but they didn't choosed some good college kid to be their face...they choosed Michael Jordan. That's how you play the game.

Now Bill, you asked wich new metal bands I like, tell me first what is new? A band wich is 3 years old?

they chose Michael Jordan when he was a young player on the rise. How old was he when they picked him up, 22, 23? Not 41 with his best days behind him.

yes they picked up when he was young but made him their main guy when he was the most popular sportsman on the planet.

also, MJ was instantly a huge star, like Ed or Randy in music

that's exactly it. They picked him up on his way up and he became the biggest athlete on the planet. Nike was smart and lucky that they hooked their cart up to absolutely the right horse.

That's not the same as making EVH, or Vai, or Zakk the No. 1 guy to represent the company. How is that providing longevity for the company? In 10 years time you'll have a guy in his 50s (or 60s, in Eddie's case) as the face of the company. How many teens are going to want to buy one then? Gibson don't use Les Paul to promote their guitars to a younger crowd - they paint bullseyes on them and have a hairy wannabe biker do it instead. And that works well for them now, but is he still going to be marketable to youngsters in 10 years time?

It does bring up an interesting point as to who the "face" of Jackson should be.

I'm afraid I have no idea who Morton, Loomis, Alexi, or any of these other artists are. Had they not been endorsed I wouldn't even know what they look like. I pick up the guitar magazines but I'm looking at a bunch of strangers. Apparently I'm at a point where this new wave of metal music has shown up unbeknownst to me. So maybe I can be an objective voice in all this.

I really don't know who the spokesperson for Jackson could be. Unless they go out and get someone else's main artist I just don't see it.

And to be fair, right now there isn't a Clapton, EVH, Slash, Rhoads, etc. who is putting the entire guitar world on its ear. That's the kind of player that any company needs to be its main push. Heck even Wylde, Mustaine, Hammett, etc. are big enough names to do the job.

Wonder why ESP has so many endorsers and so many sig models? It's got to be because nobody stands out head and shoulders above the rest these day. Sure they started out with Hammett and Lynch and that was all they needed to get started. But those two are more figureheads than active artists these days. So ESP went with the "shotgun" approach. Just endorse everybody who'll sign with you and hope for the best. And that's why ESP is moving guitars.

Gibson and Fender are way above all this because their main sell is their reputations.

PRS really made noise with the whole Tremonti, Santana, and that whole wave of bands a while back (Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin, you get the idea). Everytime I turned on MTV I saw a PRS through a Mesa Amp during that period. Presto, PRS is on the map.

Shecter has also gone for ESPs approach, just with a smaller roster of players. Works for them too.

Ibanez has a nice balance of mainstays (Vai, Satriani) and blended it with new talent to create a very even and wide appealing roster or artists.

Don't even get me started on Dean. I never even knew who Dimebag was until he was killed. Now I can't walk into a music store without seeing one of his guitars. The whole push of Dime related guitars is almost creepy. I can see paying tribute with one model (ala SRV). But to basically turn over your entire company to it seems slightly wrong. But business is business.

So it seems our basic complaint is that Jackson hasn't been aggressively advertising and endorsing artists like the other companies have. Seems like a very fair complaint. I have problems with that as well. I would love to turn on the TV and see Jacksons being played in video after video. But sadly, I don't see that happening anytime soon.

But who's it gonna be? Who could it be?

I'll bet that works better than having an relativiely unknown guy as a poster boy. There isn't even a one young guitar player who has a "guitar god" status. Everything that Gibson does...works. They don't need to have young players, they sell bazillion guitars anyway...because of their old but very well working strategy.

Hiring Jeff Loomis and Trivium would make Jackson, sell a lot of guitars.
