Re: Iced Earth

hmmmm, I understand that gettysburg was necessary..and a pivotal point in the Civil War, but, I still don't see the point in writing raucous "tribute" heavy metal song.

I just don't agree with the feeling I get from the piece schaffer wrote, his style of metal is way too..."hell yeah" for lack of a better term, to be describing something like the Civil War.

It's not your standard metal lyric fare,
I agree. Jon is a big history buff though, and this stuff means something to him. My guess is he decided to see if anyone else would respond to it in his writing.

I'm a Southerner, but a patriotic American first. My parents were both New Yorkers, after all; that's where I get the smartass in me! It's profound to me that, had Lee won at Gettysburg, the CSA would've had areal chance to gain its
independence. If that had happened, for sure the United States (the Union) would
not have become a world power in the 20th century - unless the 2 countries merged again by mutual consent later. How different would today's world be if that had been the case? Germany would probably rule all Europe - that or Russia would. Europe under a Kaiser or Tsar in that case, because WWI may not have gone so far as to weaken the German and Russian Empires to the point of collapse.

Sorry, I'm a history nerd too!

Anyway, if his history album doesn't fly, back to his old stock. The next album with Ripper, if he stays for another, will tell the tale as to whether Iced Earth can still be viable.

i love the album. not my favorite album of theirs, but, it's pretty damn close. tim's voice just seems to fit into the way the band plays. i thought one day that this is a good mix of maiden and priest...you know, they could be called iron priest. can't wait to see them live, too. just got to wait for jon's back to heal. hope it does quick!

yeah lerx, I know what you mean.

I hope Iced Earth gets back to doing songs about the STormrider..and other such shit. IT just fits them better IMO.

maybe a concept album concerning the trojan war is in order. to coincide with the movie that's coming out soon. That...would kick ass with an Iced Earth soundtrack.

Re: Iced Earth

I got the IE album a few weeks ago and I really liked it. I'm not an emotional sap or history buff, but I really liked it. I like Tim Owens better than Barlow (Of course, I only have IE's tribute to the gods, I need to check out Stormrider it sounds like). Two things I really liked, Schaffer's pick hand! Being a lefty playing right handed I can appreciate a killer rythm guitar, and Tim Owens sounding like a Bruce Dickenson/Dio with a little Halford for good measure. Two things I can't get over though, the 9-11 song (do eagles even have tear ducts? is all I can think about when I hear that song!) and Greenface lyrics - what do real combat Marines think of lines like 'your teeth and ears are trophies to me?' I realize I might be nit-picking in my old age, but these things upset me.

Re: Iced Earth

'your teeth and ears are trophies to me?'-Wasn't that more common in Pacific theater-WWII?

Re: Iced Earth

I'm not sure, sounds like an Iwo-Jima/Pacific theatre kind of thing, but I was thinking more Vietnam Era. I guess I shouldn't be all worked up, cause a suppose a Marine that is into the whole experience far enough to collect his prey's body parts is a bad-mutha and deserves a heavy tune devoted to the darker side of that kind of work. I can only hope someone driven to collect body parts for trophies is able to make it back to society as a productive citizen someday. Seems like you'd either come back as Mr. Rogers, or Jeffrey Dahmler, but it'd be hard to work the register at the local 'wanna sack' and listen to people complain about piddly crap when you see death like that.
But the deeper question, do eagles have tear ducts? Where's Steve Erwin when you need him?

Yea, Gettysburg is pretty epic but in my opinion, nothing beats A Change of Seasons by Dream Theater.

Gettysburg is awesome. The rest of the CD is just okay. Ripper does a fine job. Never liked Barlow.
