I think Petrucci's very good but The new DT album just sounds like hes doing exercises with his metronome turned way up. Every thing else I've heard from him is MUCH better.

Being one who loves a good arguement I can tell you that arguing opinion is pointless because nobody ever wins( unless one of the participents is extremely weak willed ). That being said I'm a huge JP fan as well as many of the other guitarists mentioned in this thread. Any guitarist that inspires someone else to improve themselves as a player deserves our recognition as guitarists. We all strive to be better at this art that we love and knocking others for those who inspire them to do so will only make this thread much longer. Can't we all just get along?

Re: What\'s so good about petrucci?

Petrucci is a guitar players player.
Dt is ok but he is an incredible player.
If you don't like him so what. I get bored with Symphony X and have listened to all of them numerous times, so what.

Why don't you post up some mp's of a few of Romeo's solo's, since you have become such an accomplished guitar player that Petrucci bores you; you must know quite a large amount of it, since you have put so much time and energy into his music.

Later trollboy, talk to you when your mom lets you back on the computer.

Dross? Is that you? HOw the hell are ya man? Now where's that damned cockroach thingy?

Opinions are like assholes everybodies got one. Arguing musical taste is all relative. Some people love the Dorrs and the greatfull dead. Me personally: can't stand either one.

Petrucci would and does kick Yngwies ever growing ass and mops up the floor with the left overs. I love Yngwie but hes frikkin repetative as hell. Almost every solo is the same or least they sound the same. He has great technique and speed and musical knoiwledge but does that make him everybodies favorite? NO!. He is one of mine however I do like his style and the phrasing he uses but he is not Petrucci. Petrucci is a guitar players guitar player. He does what he does effertlessly kind of like Eddie VH does with his fingerboard antics. JP's tone may not be the best when hes playing by himself like in his videos etc.. but it fits perfectly in the mix of the band. when there i sos much going on musicaly in DT you have to stand out but yet blend in. He does this perfectly. MT just listen to the music and enjoy it. Don;t over analize it you may learn something new. Music is made to be appreciated and enjoyed by listening to it and feeling the composers/ players emotions of the moment. Petrucci has some major chops and is ahead ofhis time. But then so was Hendrix. JP may be a lower profile player than say EVH or Randy but that doesnt make him any less a player or a master of the guitar.
MT it seems to me that you're of an analitical nature and over think things. But take a lot literally. Apply some of that brain power you have to relxing and enjoying DT and Petrucci. You may be surprised at what you hear. and even learn by just listening

On the new DT CD,Petrucci is about as flawless as it gets. I am sure he put alot of time and thought into that record. It is a friggin masterpiece and again raises the bar for all the other guitarists out there.

See, I disagree. He raises no bar for me cause I don't play guitar like that, nor do I listen to guitar music like that. It bores the crap out of me. I'm sure the technical execution is wonderful, but tell me this: Why is it you never hear, say, violinists being all blown away cause some other violinist can move his fingers really fast and play fast clean difficult lines? Guitarists are the only ones who are impressed/seduced by that.
What does that have to do with a song that moves a person?

For the record, I have owned two DT discs that I've given away and seen them live twice cause they were playing with someone I DID want to see. I guess if you have to explain it to me I still won't get it. Whatever.

It may raise the bar for some players but not for most .

Not for Olaf Lenk , Not for Magnus Carlsson , Not for Magnus Nillson , Not for Uli Jon Roth , Not for Mike Romeo , Not for Greg Howe , not for about another 100 players I could sit here and mention all day ...everyday

but yes , he's still amoung those players who are simply THE BEST!

What a person represents themselves to be in recording is only a slice of the entire person.
This is strings, wood, personality, practice sweat and blood.
Reinforing your talent is one thing, but slamming an internationally recognized consistantly signed talent such as Dream Theater/John Petrucci, who have the resume to back themselves in most any career direction they wish to go is going a little far. Even if John were to lose his ability to play by some terrible incident..his knowledge, reputation as well as his credentials as a mainstay forerunner of quality rock guitar will still take him further than some people shooting an opinion of judgement will achieve in their lifetime.

Yeah, I do the same thing sometimes, but I'm very cautious about making egocentric statements glorifying myself and pissing on others that have a track record of success, their own signature guitar models designed by not one, but two different major guitar manufacturers and a number of major label cd's as well as awards under their belt.

I used to know this guy who was a very well schooled guitarist and a great talent. His opinion on Dream Theater was "these guys can't write" Well, again, what they do isn't fitting mainstream, it's defining another niche and standard for emulation. Art doesn't hit the same people in the same way, that is why there is such a broad diversity of it. I'm sure the person who made that comment still hasn't been recognized for his writing on a natinal level either. Again, a matter of signed vs unsigned. If you were to be in Varney's stable of talents, I may take an attitude like that with more than a grain of salt.

When you get asked to perform in G3, you really are not a slouch. Like him or not, John Petrucci has been and continues to be a forerunner as a guitarist who's talent and name is recognized world over.
