Well, classical musicians are jaded by their arduous education. My impression is that most hate everyone better than them and hold those not as good in contempt. I'm sure there are many exceptions but that's what I've seen.

You're right, if that's not what you're into, then it's immaterial to you. Just
because you don't personally dig it though, don't write it off along with everyone who does. Remember, the author of this thread wasn't comparing him with Matthias Jabs or Wolf Hoffmann, who I guess you might like more, but with Yngwie, Michael Angelo and Michael Romeo,
who I guess you probably like no more than Petrucci. I could be wrong about that.

To me Petrucci is techincal AND plays with feel; I hear it anyway. If it doesn't trip your trigger, fair enough.
Don't tell me I don't know feeling because you don't like him though; that's
not fair, and not correct. I like music ranging from Grank Funk to Dream Theater, and it all reaches me on different levels. It doesn't HAVE to shred, but it's not a sin TO shred either, and I mean musically, not mindlessly.

Good points, Lerx. To me the term "shredder" is a little different than what I'm reading here. In my opinion, I still consider EVH, Uli Roth and Michael Schenker to be shredders. Those are the guys that changed everything for me and were my first exposure to fast, clean and precise playing. Not only could they burn, but they could/can make my sack jump into my gut with emotion - players with feel and speed.
I hear that in MacAlpine, Malmsteen and some Petrucci, too. I think if Petrucci was writing with AOR in mind, you may hear some different sides to his playing. I would think it a difficult thing to play with tons of feel with Portnoy behind you...well maybe not, Alex Lifeson refutes that shitting train of thought. Nevermind.

I always appreciate disagreeing non personal/insulting opinions from obviously intelligent ppl, since I have things to learn from they, and I am always ears to these opinions.

many ppl above have provided those valuable comments, and I wish I would be able to communicate with these ppl at a better level (in person for instance, much clearer and easier).

as for opinions like LRGman's, I despise it and take no regard of it. if ur dissing me for dissing someone else (which Im not exactly at all), then ur no better and just as stupid as u claim I am.

I assembled this computer thank you very much (its really easy, just need to know a bit about computers), and my parents are living on the opposite side of the world,, I'm sure she's happy using the computer I made for her back home.

Yo Mt: Whether or not Dream Theater/Petrucci make good music is the kind of subjective drivel that has no end and no point. Regular forum contibutors avoid those kind of topics because of the predictable and yawn inducing result.

On the more factual issue of JP's technical proficiency, it seems maybe you are naive. He is one of the absolute top technicians in rock/metal guitar, and has very few peers, other than a small select group (Malmsteen, McAlpine, Shawn Lane, Vinnie Moore, Greg Howe, Paul Gilbert, Mathias Ekhlund,Vai, Becker and a few others). Any one of those guys would confirm that, (except Lane of course).

Any notion of you surpassing him in a couple of years belongs under the category of comedy. You have no chance whatsoever.

For there to even be the slightest hope of that happening, you would already have to be comfortably playing at the the level of Lynch, James Murphy, Jeff Loomis, Friedman or someone like that. How hilarious does even that sound?

Since you are a university student, and can't devote anywhere near the time to practicing that it would take for any of this to happen, the reality is that two years from now you will be just somewhat better than you are now.

If you don't like Dream Theater, I heartily encourage you to avoid buying their CD's. As far as anonymous bragging on the internet:

and my intent was not to diss DT but to ask what they like about DT, what they think is good in them., at least I had the will to try to hear ppl's opinion's about them and offering my own,

if u dislike their music maybe u should ask what other ppl think too huh>??

and btw, I do play malmsteen pretty comfortably.

never took the time to listen to lynch and those other ppl u mentioned., too busy analyzing malmsteen, then romeo, and now romeo and rusty.
