Re: European G3

I just got the G3 Live in Denver DVD, and I thought Yngwie kicked ass, as did Satch and Vai.

I agree. I really enjoyed all three players on the DVD. The double cd has the same three songs for the jam at the end, but the solo spots are a little different.

        The first neo-classical metal player!!
He came before Randy or Yngwie!
Ever check out his early solo stuff, Earthquake and Firewind are awesome albums!!
He sounds like Hendrix meets Yngwie!

Fripp is amazing, if you haven't seen him definitely go. I was lucky enough to see the Discipline tour and it is one of the best shows I've ever seen. Apparently Uli did a Euro G3 with them a few years ago. He's definitely one of my favorites. I wish he'd come to the states sometime. As for Yngwie, he as well as the other 2 were great at the show I saw. But when people don't like him they just seem to hate em. I expected to like Satriani the least of the three but his show was really good, he didn't f-around alot like the other 2 during his set. It was kinda sad, the biggest crowd reaction of the night was when Vai licked his guitar and when his band was all playing each others instruments. Yngwie is a freak though, he could do it in his sleep it looks like. My only complaint was he could've slowed it down once n a while. If you think he sucks though you should watch the concerto dvd. It's amazing shit. Of the 3 at G3 I like Malmsteen the best. Too bad he's only done 3 good studio albums.

Speaking of G3 tours, does anyone know who Petrucci brought with him a couple of years ago?

Fripp can definitely hold his own with Vai and Satch! His work is a bit more subtle and 'cerebral', though, so I'm not sure how well it will go down with a shredder crowd. However, on the most recent King Crimson tour that came through these parts last year, Adrian Belew came down with the flu, so Fripp and the rhythm section came out and did an awesome instrumental concert. It would have fit right in with the G3 concept, and maybe that is the lineup that Fripp will bring along on tour (Trey Gunn on the Warr Guitar--much like the Chapman Stick--and Pat Mastelotto on electronic percussion). Fripp can go between blinding speed and doing a bunch of serene "soundscapes" using guitar synth and a mountain of rack gear.

Probably because he sucked hard on the tour. His slot was friggin unbearable. He is a shadow of what he once was. That or maybe he didn't want to do it. My guess is because he was horrible. The majority of the people that I spoke to that went hated him. It was the third time I saw him and the absolute worst. It was so bad, he ruined G3 for me. I mean all G3s to come in the future as well.
So because Yngwie had a bad show, you've
judged every future guitarist that'll ever play on a G3 tour? Man, that makes a LOT of sense!

Oh yeah, Robert Fripp! He founded King Crimson, one of the earliest prog-rock bands, and he IS a helluva
                      guitarist!

No.

What I meant was that I personally go to every G3 show primarily to see Joe and Steve. I love them. The third person is a plus for me, but not a necessity. In this years show, Joe and Steve had shorter slots than usual and a lot of the show was Yngwie. I have seen Joe and STeve so many times that I can now say it isn't worth it. My tickets were $80. That night the sound wasn't as good as it could have been and Yngwie was literally painful. Most people had their ears covered and were mocking him the whole time. My friend and I each came to the conclusion that we would wait for the dvd in the future. It will be cheaper, the sound better and we could fast forward through the crap. Vai's recent live dvd was $14, was 3.5hrs long and was a much better time. That said, if Steve or Joe come around again solo...I am there. Every time I have seen Yngwie, I have wanted my money back. This time he was absolutley the worst.

Yngwie is Yngwie. What did you expect, him to set the vibe like satch and vai can do. Yngwie is known for one thing, overplaying. I would still go see him and enjoy it. I just like seeing shows of live music. It always amazes me to hear people ***** about shows, like each one is suposed to be some kind of magical expierience. I always have a good time at any music show, from a 5$ garage band to $80 shows. Hey if you would rather sit at home and watch tv, do it.

I heard a rumor that Petrucci was going to release the music he played for the G3 tour. I also noticed he as "An Evening with John Petrucci and Jorden Rudess" coming out next month. Does anyone know if that will be recordings of his G3 set?

I doubt it. I think that Petrucci/Rudess gig was some kind of charity event that took place awhile ago and primarily involves Jordan's music, or maybe an improvised kind of thing.

Last I heard Petrucci was still planning to put together a cd of his G3 music, but he hasn't had any time to record it, since Dream Theater is pretty time-consuming. I have a bootleg of his performance from one of the G3 shows, and the music is very cool! BTW, he has said that most likely the rhythm section would be somebody other than LaRue/Portnoy on the studio versions.

BTW Dave LaRue rocks! Saw him back in about '94 when the Steve Morse Band toured Oz. My wife was pregnant at the time and my little girl was kicking away in her belly thru the entire gig.
