The thing that sucks about the Justice album is you can't hear the bass.

The thing that sucks about St. Anger is the snare drum sound... Oscar The Grouch pounding on his garbage can lid (bad reggae drum sound)! Aside from the drums, the album isn't really all that bad song-wise, but I'd rather listen to Load and Reload over that.

Modesty management aside, eh, from a technical point of view I almost agree with you.

But I also think that Bob Rock's production on St. Anger sounds so artificial and purposeless in its effort to sound different and raw.
More of an over-enginereed audio experiment and ultimately another example of the producer's ego trips, rather than a complement to true artistic inspiration.

For Metallica i.e. the quintessential commercial sell-out mega band, fresh out of the Napster bullfest, going back to this raw, garage-y feel sounds about as authentic as Kirk's hairplugs...

who knows what the real purpose was, I know that the guys from Metallica are mocking this album a lot lately and are ashemed of it...maybe just another BS to promot their new album..who knows.

Maybe it was Bob's ego trip...if it was, it was a fucking good one
Bob has always liked to experiment, ALWAYS, but he usually makes the records sound gigantic, amazing room ambience, delicate use of transparent verbs, loud and clear mix without any mastering and foor noise bullshit. Raw isn't his trademark. I know he can do everything but I'm not sure if it is really his thing to do that, maybe it was his own little experiment where he used a band wich has sold more than 90 million albums

Funny is that some people actually belive that Bob can't make anything good anymore or has never been good. I find that to be hilarious, a man who used 50 mics on a drumset and a dozen mics on guitar amps and mixed them together without ANY phase cancellation is a fucking genius. Only a handfull people can do that, and some dudes who record metalheads' favourite uber-chugga-chugga guitar tones aren't one of them.
But Motley Crue's new album will be done this year and Bob's critics can eat their own shit when it's in the stores.

and what even more sucks is that the bass lines were arranged like they were made for kindergarden's polka-punk band

I laughed when I heard st. anger and concluded its material thats very typical from a band thats washed up.

I agree that people hop on the Bob sucks band wagon...fact is...He has done some amazing work...The Black album production was great...I just wish he would have kept his mouth shut regarding their musical direction...Thats why that album had no aggression. Production was great though...

The other albums did nothing for me but let me down...

I think people talk shit about Flemmings job on the AJFA but that album broke some ground as far a metal recordings go...in the way it was so heavy and clean...I believe it inspired a lot of to be metal producers...Yeah...the bass was burried but it also gave it a very dense sound...

Flemmings didn't produced jack shit on AJFA, James and Lars told him how and what to do. Producer's job is to tell bandmembers what to do.

As far as Black Album's musical direction goes, it has nothing to do with Bob, the songs were allready written, it's the biggest BS ever that metallica wanted to write mainstream songs because of Bob, the songs were written before they met Bob. And I liked the songs on Black Album, because they really were good tunes, not just some fast riffs.

AJFA is my favorite Metallica album. I like the mix. To me, it has a dark and "spooky" quality to it which fits the subject matter. Also, I think Hammet's playing was at its peak.

It is hard to judge their new direction from a live recording of a demo. You can bet they'll tinker with it before it is on the record. I'm not a huge Metallica fanboy, but I'm looking forward to their new record. It would be great to see them regain their old form... though I'm not holding my breath.

not only was the Black Album's production great, it was the biggest productional statement ever in the world of heavy metal. I've yet to hear a metal record wich has been made with such effort. It took A LOT of time to make that one. There are like bazillion layers on that album. They expereimented so much it's insane. No typical double track, overdub shit. Each track is so different. And the mix is godlike, it is wide and fat as hell and yet so spacey. The room acoustics and dynamics are out of this world.
They worked on every single detail. It's like heavy metal's Peter Gabirel record.

James said right on their "Year and a half in the life..." That Bob suggested a lot of changes that made the songs less "Dark"...They said it was refreshing and even totally changed "Through The Never" from it's original name of "When Never Comes" James said it was so dark and Bob help them look at music differently intead of..."Hitting that E chord all the time".

Justice is my favorite album from them!! I think it sounds great as well, although I agree that you can't hear the Jason well! I'm not a big Metallica fan, but I pick Justice cuz it has the most balls, and killer riffing/soloing on it, Lars also wasn't lazy back then either! I Hate lazy drummers!!
