  • My major influences (on the fly) that I admire the most and/or grew up with are:

    Marty Friedman
    Jason Becker
    Yngwie Malmsteen
    Chuck Schuldiner
    Nuno Bettencourt
    Steve Vai
    Chris Oliva
    Dave Mustaine
    Luca Turilli
    Kee Marcello
    Syu
    Vinnie Moore
    Reb Beach
    Uli Jon Roth
    John Petrucci
    Jeff Loomis
    Joe Satriani
    Michael Romeo
... Just to name a few of the amazing talents out there, however my own playing style is hugely inspired by:

Friedman (Dragon's Kiss is my guitar bible)
    Roth
    Mamlsteen
    Schuldiner
    Oliva
    Bettencourt

Edit: I don't know how I forgot to mention Michael Romeo up there, he's probably the most fluid technical guitarist I've seen live in recent years!

    • I lied.

      its all Warren DeMartini

I never noticed until I played some Ratt last week (Nobody Rides for Free), his bluesy/rocky style (late 80s) is definately exactly how I play, but Neal Schon made me more conscious of note selection I think, and helped make me a better player

      • somehow i didn't include Chuck Schuldiner in my list - um my bad, yeah Chuck +1,000.

Another my bad shit, Dave Prichard, damn, and he's a major one for me and not mentioned enough in the alumni listed in this thread.

        both RIP.

        • Giuseppe Verdi - he showed the way how to make music which would appeal the most to single haute bourgeoisie dames who happen to be most excellent source of finance and privileges for persons with lazy-ass vagabond artist mentality like myself.

              • When I first started playing, it all began and ended with Randy Rhoads. As time went on, guys like Satriani, Vai, Gilmour, etc., etc.

                  • Slash and Zakk Wylde made me want to play guitar. Nowadays it's Becker, Gilbert, LeTekro, Bumblefoot, Buckethead and Vai that make me want to keep playing. Or to give up, depending on how my playing is on any given day!!

                    • Terry Kath (guitar player for Chicago who played the solo in 25 or 6 to 4). He was considered a virtuoso at the time.
Ace Frehley (he should be on every guitar players list who is over 30)
                      Randy Rhoads
                      Uli Jon Roth (Ulrich Roth)

                        • This is easy. My first one was Frank Marino..then some new guy named Eddie. Combined with the "evil" riffs of Iommi.

Then Lynch, Demartini, Becker, Friedman, Yngwie, Sykes, Gary More, Schenker, Akira, Steve Stevens, Oliva..All the Mike Varney fuckers..ect..ect

Then I was playing like Ed and all his clones for years and that got me stuck in a dated rut until I met Jeff Loomis back in '96. I hung out with him for hours before I saw him play w/Nevermore in front of 25-30 people. I didn't realize I was talkin' shit with my new guitar god. The best metal guitarist. The only one that broke me outta the VH/80's mold.

Then I re-discovered Uli..FUCK!!!! FUCK!!!! FUCK!!!! I always loved him ..but one day I was listening to his first '78 solo release Earhquake. I paid attention..and heard the best solo ever put to tape in "So many lives away". Jeff Loomis may be the best metal guitarist..but Uli is hands down the best IMO! The most dymanic, expressive, vocal plater ever..just tune out his voice. That's what blocked me from really soaking it in. He insists on singing because Jimi is his biggest influence. He worships the guy so much..he married Jimi's girlfriend. She passed on around 10 years ago. He also loves Jeff Loomis..they are freinds.

He is so humble..wnever he jams with anyone..he doesn't showboat like Yngwie prolly would. He lets them do there stuff; Like the Uli/Gilbert jam..it's on youtube. He loves jamming with anyone. I'd like to see him and Loomis together..But Jeff would have to learn som classic rock tunes. I don't think that's his nitch..but he could easily do it.

Call me a fanboy...and for good reason.

BTW..I know there's players out there like Al DiMeola, Gambale, Holdsworth..but Uli and Loomis are those who just brought it new levels in my book. They inspire me. They are so original and dedicated...and humble.

I compiled a list of my fave players..I think I have it somewhere. Whoever mentions a player that touched them..I assure you it's on that fuggin' list! Because they ALL touched me as well...as a muscian....not in a naughty place.

Hey..fuck the typos. Spellcheck ain't my gig...deal with it.

                            • I have only come to fully appreciate this in the past few years, but looking back now on where my inspiration to play initially came from, I need not look past Randy. There was just something in his presentation, composition and approach that woke up something in me, and I've never lost it. All these years later, I still find fascination in his playing.

                              • Coroner is probably my #1 influence. Their prog-thrash riffing and soloing is still too unique and bad-ass and had a big effect on me when I first heard it.

                                Plus the usual........Dimebag, Randy, EVH.
