Slash is what got me to play, but sound-wise my influences would be Friedman, Chuck Schuldiner, Satch, and Dimebag.

George Lynch, Randy Rhoads, Dime and Slash were probably the main guys that got me into playing guitar in the first place.
My current guitar and songwriting influences are primarily the duos of Brent Hinds/Bill Kelleher, Mark Morton/Willeh Adler and Adam Dutkiewicz/Joel Stroetzel with a little Adam Jones thrown in for good measure, while my lyrical influences would be Corey Taylor and Maynard.Last edited by 6string40; 12-18-2010, 09:17 PM.

Starting up;
Curt Cobain (yes I was into grunge at one point), Slash, Richie Sambora then James Hetfield and Dimebag
Trying to shred (emphasis on "try");
Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman
Song writing wise;
Mikael Akerfeldt for the kooky arrangements and clean passages
Jesper Stromblad - to me this guy is the Jimmy Page of our times, his sound has influenced so many bands in so many ways and he never gets the recognition I think he deserves.
Max Cavalera - ethnic without being generic
Eric Peterson - crushing riffs and sound
Mark Tremonti - great songwriter and pretty good player, taught me a lot about letting a song flowI feel festive all year round. Deal with it.

as for picking up the guitar:
Jimmy Page- lifelong hero
Thomas Erak- the genius that gave me the smack in the face that told me i was going to play the guitar for the rest of my life, and probably my favourite frontman in rock and roll history
influences in my style:
with my band:
Dave Mustaine- the greatest, most well-rounded metal guitarist in my opinion. rhythm-wise, this man is responsible for a huge chunk of my inspiration
Chuck Schuldiner- arguably THE greatest metal visionary ever. not only did he pioneer multiple genres in the metal scene, but he never stopped pushing the boundaries and following his heart when it came to his music. my biggest motivation for pushing my own boundaries and a huge influence on my soloing style (and my attempts to improve upon it)
Marty Friedman- if anyone knows how to be fresh, versatile, colourful, and nearly inimitable when it comes to soloing in metal, it's this guy. his work on Rust In Peace and and Countdown to Extinction will permanently affect my views on the importance of being tasteful and interesting when it comes to soloing.
and there's a whole lot of residual stuff that seeps in after those two, incl. the duos of Holt/Altus (Exodus) and Eschbach/Knight (TBDM), Paul Waggoner of Between the Buried and Me, and the ever-charming team of Pat O'Brien and Jack Owen
Solo Endeavours:
i try to make my solo stuff an even blend of my favourite solo artists, so basically what comes out is any concentration of a mixture of these guitarists;
Buckethead
Kaki King
Adam Jones
Bill Kelliher
Jack WhiteI don't trust anybody who doesn't like Led Zeppelin.

I wanted to be a guitar player because of Randy Rhoads.
I can't play like ANY of my influences but after Randy, the list of my early influences would include
Yngwie, Gary Moore, Paco De Lucia, Vivian Campbell, Akira Takasaki, John Sykes, Dweezil Zappa, Steve Vai, Jake E Lee.
In reality, I've been influenced by every piece of music I have ever heard, plus the sounds in my head...GTWGITS! - RacerX

Some of my influences are a little more obscure than most people, and some of them are old fuggers that I've listened to since I was a kid. Mostly its good bluesy guitarists with a hard edge.
Mark Kendall
Tony Iommi
Carlos Cavazo
Leslie West
Pat Travers
Hagar/Montrose
Gary Rossington
Damon Johnson
The list goes on and on...Prosecutors will be violated...
