I still get amazed every time I put on any of the VH albums and really listen to his playing, and not just the leads; he is an amazing rhythm player - if you can call it that. Sometimes I think his notoriety for tapping over shadows how incredible he is at phrasing, vibrato, rhythm, and normal (non-tapping) lead work. His tone has always been incredible. For me, I can listen to and be amazed by many players - Hendrix, Beck, Via, etc., but I always end up returning to Ed.
As A longtime lurker, your post made me come out. I feel the exact same way. As the most eccentric player ever, he always made it fit perfect.

I'm a stone cold EVH fan...what's done is done. You can't revoke greatness. I shure wish he'd get things together tho. I don't like 1/2 of the people I work with but I still show up every (other) day. That and at least most of the time I'm sober.
This is starting to get a little discouraging..........

(that's the first positive thing I've had to say so far!)
