Following the post with the wanker who admittingly had good intentions but an ego to match and a lack of skill I decided to search for Proper Tributes to the late great Darrel Lance Abbott and I found some.
GWAR was doing a gig when the news of the killing reached them, they played the second part of their set without costumes as a direct tribute to Dime.
Former Korn guitarist Brian Welch made a promise to Dimebag when Pantera and Korn toured together that he would record solo's in his music someday. This is the result. (I admit that "Head" is no Eddie Van Halen but at least the guy knows his limits and has no illusions about being better than Dimebag was. And you can't deny that his mournful song is a well meant tribute.)
And then there's Zakk Wylde's "In this river" which is the most haunting tribute of all.
