I am talking about great lead guitar playing and how a women can be a marginal player and be considered great by other guitar players and a guy needs to be friggin Malmsteen.

Marginal by what standard?

See, this is where the problem lies. So what if the hypothetical girltarist in question "is only playing Pentatonics". What fits the song? Why should she shred like a man? Because Men have to shred like Gods to impress other players?

Who imposes this idiotic requirement? Other guitarists. "That guy sucks, I can play that!"
So what? Who are you? Did you come here for reinforcement of (A) you have a chance at a music career or (B) you'll never have a career in music even though you're so awesomely Godlike on guitar?

Personally, I sneer at other guitarists who set themselves and their solos apart from the song. They treat the band as their personal backing track for them to do whatsoever they wish despite (and often, to spite) traditional compositional sense - "it's my turn to stand out from the rest of the band and show off!"


So who is to judge what is "mediocre"? Just because you say to yourself "see, if that was me, I'd start off with a little bit of this and segue into that and drop some Phrygian voicings for that part and....."?

So exactly what line are you trying to draw? Better than the average club player, a 'guitar god', or better than marginal player?

The clip I posted is 'better than the average (male) club player', definitely beyond marginal. But it's not 'godlike', so it doesn't meet your wavering threshold of excellence? Umm... yeah.




Okay, here's where you're trying to apply male testosterone and ego to a girl... perhaps too many 'guitar gods' tried too hard to look like women when you were young and has led you onto the path of gender confusion. Trying to apply this logic to the female mindset is just wrong... on many levels.

Fact. A women doesn't need to be nearly as good as a guy to get respect from other lead guitar players. Why is that exactly??

Why is Orianthi a featured NAMM soloist and sharing the stage with Carlos Santana?
Is it her incredible breakthru chops? Nope
Is it her amazing songwriting skills? Nope
Could it be that she has an affiliation with PRS and Boogie or Carlos Santana in some way? Probably.
So.. why do you think she would get the chance to play on the big stage with one of the most recognizable and successful soloists that has ever lived?
Its because there is a DOUBLE STANDARD when it comes to men and women guitar players. Especially soloists... which are who I am talking about.

I just don't get it.
Back in the old days.. we would go to battle of the bands or to clubs to see other bands just so we could rank and bust balls. After all.. to us it was all competition. Kill or be killed. Lead guitar players are VERY territorial and competitive. Believe it. If we saw a great guitar player it would inspire us to practice practice practice. If we saw a hacker we would bust his balls. The same thing would happen to us when our band played live.
We would call these musicians in the crowd "critics". They would stand in the back of the club with their arms folded with their hot girlfriends at their side and they wouldn't clap or respond. They would just stare and listen and make comments to their friends if you flubbed a note here or there. I am sure you guys who actually toured or played live know what I am talking about. I practically toured for 5 years straight.



If there was a band with a female soloist (and there were some), there would never be heckling or comments or snickers from the "critics". Even if she totally sucked. Everybody would comment on how cool it was to see a chick soloist and if she was hot.. well that was all the better. After all.. these were the days of spandex and bippy (tube) tops!

That... my friends is a DOUBLE STANDARD.

Oh yea.. and one more thing..

Fact. All guitar players.. male or female.. want to be soloists. Those who can... do. Those who can't... play rhythm.
Its a harsh statement and I apologize to all the rhythm players out there but you know its true. If you could wave your magical guitar wand or click your ruby slippers 3 times and repeat

I agree with this assessment. she's very good. I can also say there's nothing there I can not do, so she's not any kind of insane talent.

That's easy:

1) She is very attractive.
2) It makes Carlos Santana seem young and current.

And Orianthi is wise to play along side Carlos Santana and Paul Reed Smith because she is better than they are. If she were playing along side a good guitar player then she'd be in trouble.

There are double (or more) standards in just about everything in life. Deal with it. You need to do more than just play well to get noticed. Here are some things you might consider:

Get a HOT singer or perhaps bassist
Write some AMAZING songs
Become famous for something else first (acting or something)
Wear a KFC bucket on your head. Doh scratch that it's been done
Get millions of dollars to promote yourself
Get enough surgery to turn yourself into a good looking woman
