  • Did EVH really use a duncan Custom-custom pup?

I keep hearing that he switched to these when he built his kramer 5150 strat
and most of his tone on 1984, 5150,ou812, is that guitar with a duncan CC and also that "judgment day" was recording with his old original charvel with this pup
and that dimarzio made his bridge pup for the EBMM sig guitar from this pup as a starting point
    does anyone know for sure?
If it's not a CHARVEL then i dont want to play it,look at it or even fuckin THINK about it!

I don't know about EVH but I like Custom-customs, good pickups!
    1+2 = McGuirk, 2+4 = She's hot, 6-4 = Happy McGuirk

I think that was another thing he made up. He still used Gibson PAF pickups IIRC. Btw, the Custom-Custom came from the rumor he combined the magnets it uses. Another note, I think the EBMM Sig used DiMarzio Breeds.

I believe Judgement Day was the last recording that 5150 was used on, not a Charvel / Frankie or whatever....

I thought the MM guitar had 'custom' Dimarzios which were basically Tone-Zones?
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

I don't believe he used a Custom Custom, but you can get close to his sound with a '59 and some other pups. Ask on the Duncan Forum.

From my experience, the EBMM "Custom wound" Dimarzios are quite low output, not that much like a Tonezone in that respect.

NOPE! The Breed was a Steve Vai signature pickup and came around when EVH had already signed with peavey. The pickups on the EBMM Van Halen signature guitar were Dimarzio Air zone's, which is a lower output version of the Tone zone. Both the Tone zone and Air zone pickups were designed in colleboration with EVH. But EVH liked the lower output version more so they issued the high output version as a regular pickup and the lower output as custom pickups for the Musicman signature.

Only recently did EVH allow the lower output version to be released in the regular line as the "Air zone"

Supposedly when they did the pickups for the EBMM they looked at his old pickups that had something broken and they tried to recreate whatever was going on with that pickup.

I don't know if he actually used a CC, but my 5150 replica has one in it and it sounds great! Definitely recommended.

I believe I read on the Duncan Forum that Seymour Duncan stated he was the one that actually wound them.

I've heard this from at least two people that I believe would know.

the pickup in th $25,000 EVH Franky is a duncan, the whole electronics assembly including the rusty switch and unused single coil was built by Duncan and dropped in.

The pickup in the Art Series guitars is a Fender
