For a Robert Fleishman (ex-Journey) clone, he was great. I guess Vinnie Vincent also thought so since Robert was on his first album and Mark on his second.
I can think of tons of other singers from the '80s that were better, though.

Would you mind naming some? It kind of bothers me I know the name of the guitarist in a lot of 80's bands but not the singer..
"This ain't no Arsenio Hall show, destroy something!"
Jeff Keith was always one of my favorites. Can't leave out Coverdale. Dio should always get his props (even if we're just discussing 80's, his work in the 80's was good too). Sebastian Bach had some chops. I always dug Great White's Jack Russell.
The list goes on. And yeah, Mark Slaughter is up there too.
Although I liked Coverdale the best, Slaughter has a range that is outta site. The only other guy with that range I can remember was Ian Gillan from Deep Purple- and he also was the lead in the original English cast of Jesus Christ Superstar where he really showed off his high range.
I like "singers" who sound more like dudes..with POWER..
Mark Slaughter sings like he takes it up the ass..
That's what I think!
"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!
"Well, your friend would have Bell's Palsy, which is a facial paralysis, not "Balls Pelsy" like we're joking about here." Toejam's attempt at sensitivity.

Jorn Lande has the tone, power and range of both Dio and Coverdale..amazing!!

Ray Alder (Fates Warning), Ray Gillen (Badlands/Black Sabbath), Sebastian Bach, Bruce Dickinson, Geoff Tate, every singer Yngwie's ever had... Jeff Scott Soto, Mark Boals, Joe Lynn Turner, Goran Edman, Mats Leven, Mike Vescera, (I know he's had more, but I can't think of them offhand.)
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
