I'm with ya on this one Bill... I'm in awe of Rusty's technique, but his playing does absolutely nothing for me, nor do any of the songs I've heard. IMO, he uses technique for technique's sake... just to show it off. Considering how difficult it is to make it in the music biz, I do understand that it doesn't hurt to have a "gimmick" though.

Malmsteen seems to do that nowadays too IMO. Shame, because he's supremely talented as well.

Considering all the mind boggling stuff these guys do, I'm surprised I get more of a rush from Michael Schenker's or Uli's playing than I do from the modern super shredders.

I don't mind long winded solos..in fact I listened to Vince Neil's first cd again while going thru my stuff..and I much more of a rush from Steve Stevens than Rusty..for one Stevens has a grip on his tone and overall identity..just an example.

I disagree with this one. Though Loomis does turn on the jets pretty much full time, he's got a great vibrato and rarely do his solos sound out of place or like mindless wanking.

Rusty obviously has perfect technique, we've all seen the videos, but the solo on this song has me feeling deflated.

It was a total letdown I'm sorry to say.

I was waiting to be blown away cause I've only heard one old recording of Outworld.

Song was cool and production sounds great though.

Just my opinion.

I definitely like how when they hit the solo section they do something totally different from the rest of the song. I think it's great when artists do a new riff under the solo section because it helps to elevate it. This minimizes the feeling that the solo is being done just for the sake of doing a solo.

I'm talkin about him using the same good ol' Yngwie, Gilbert and Becker licks all over again. Although I think he plays some cool riffs, his lead style isn't unique in any way.
90% of it is scales or arpeggios played up and down very fastly. Nice, you really don't have to think about them too much, they go nicely ascendingly or descendingly... thru the scale... nothing out of the box... but in strict "military" order... 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.....etc. etc.
By the time you are finished listening to the album you feel like when you hear another diminished guitar run one more time... your johnson is getting diminished.
And then you suddenly realize that you can't remember any of the solos because there were no "humable" themes within the leads at all.
And then you are listening to the Outworld-Cooley album wich isn't a weenie shrinker anymore... but your dick just complitely falls off.

I gotta admit, never heard of the fellow until now. I checked out Under the Influence just to see some other stuff with him in it. I still think Yngwie was/is the best neo-classical player around.

Seems like a ton of wanking going on with this guy. Beautiful technique but wheres the melody?

Not horrible. The solo needed editing down. Started out good but lost the plot half way through and started sounding too neoclassical. He kind of pulled it together at the end.

Speaking of Loomis and Nevermore, TGE is one of my favorite new records. The production of this Outworld track hints at it in my opinion.

That "City Of The Dead" song they released umpteen years ago was MUCH better.
