  • Tom Fukkin' Scholz-Boston- never heard a guitar tone like that until eVH came next and kinda walked on that and so on and so on, etc.

    Scholz was a genius.
Not helping the situation since 1965!

      • Sorry if i'm ressurrecting a long dead thread but I love putting in my 2 cents on these types of discussions.

Gary Moore - He's pretty much just blues these days but the man can shred. And he makes the "Rock face" like nobody else. Some may argue he wouldn't classify as underrated, but in my book he's never received the recognition he deserves.

Akira Takasaki - People always blew him off as an EVH clone but he was about a lot more than just tapping. I guess he brought it on himself with his "Exploder" solo in some respect, but his early stuff had a lot of neo-classical and jazz in it too. If you ever get the chance check out his Tusk of the Jaguar solo album.

Dudley Taft - I was driving in the car with my brother one day listening to my Sweet Water CD and my brother was in the car with me and said "Who is that playing lead?!?" I told him it was a relatively unknown Seattle band called Sweet Water and the guy playing leads was I think Dudley Taft, and he said "I thought it was Mick Ralphs."
I always felt the solos on the Sweet Water CD were brilliantly crafted, not on a technical level but as they fit in to the song on a whole.

Here's a clip from back in the day for those that have never heard (of) the band...

Which albums does he play on? I remember Robbie Blunt and Doug Boyle, but I never heard of this dude. Good chance I thought his parts were someone else.

              • That's a big list ..hmmm..some of my faves.

Uli Roth / Frank Marino / Magnus Karlsson / Jorn Viggo Lofstad / Ronnie LeTekro / Tommy Veterlli / Tore Otsby / Andy LaRoque / Jeff Loomis / Greg Howe / Criss Oliva / Warren DiMartni / James Murphy / Mike Romeo / Chris Amott / Akira Takasaki / ..and so on. Not much love

Guitar rags like GW just recycle standards..like Jimi, Ed, Randy, Kirk, Page ect...and relentlessly promote flavor of the month, trendhacks to dummy downed, zombieswine who happily wallow in poo...

Tommy, Tom Fuggin' Scholz..is..well..he is...Tom Fuggin' Scholz..

I saw Justin live with Robert... he played a bunch of cool eastern instruments and Gold Top Les Pauls with P-90s

                  • Gary Richrath not mentioned until page 18 of this thread?? Great guitarist with little respect (maybe due to the commercialization of REO's music).

Tom Scholtz not mentioned until page 19?? While revered for his innovation and sound, he was not highly recognized for his playing skill. He has some great, tasty solos. And how about his side-kick, Barry Goudreau! Equally talented and very skilled at playing the right note at the right time.

But my most under rated guitarist of all time - Tony Bourge (who?) from the band Budgie (who??).........exactly!!!!

Tony Bourge is the riff master of all time! Budgie was playing 80's and 90's music in the 70's. This power trio was way ahead of there time; they crushed!! and Tony had a way of coming up with the greatest hooks. They have been covered many times, with the most famous being "Breadfan" and "Crash Course in Brain Surgery" which were redone by Metallica.

Tony, as a guitarist, and Budgie, as a band, never have received the credit that they deserve.

Brad is amazing, I've posted about him a couple times, saw him from the front row at Pepsi Center just last month, amazing vantage point, so fast when he wants to be, so clean with nothing to cover up the mistakes, if he made them, just won a grammy for his instrumental Throttleneck.

Not for everyone obviously, but the dude can play with the best of them.

Amazing collection of gear he has too.

Love the Queenryche sound too, OM is was an incredible composition.

                            • I'd have to say the most underrated guitar player is me. Why the hell am I not on the cover of every magazine in the world every month? I should be so famous that I grace the cover of Model Railroad Journal at LEAST six times a year. Whatever, I'm just gonna go down in my basement and practice until somebody discovers my talent...

Rocky George was awesome! Whatever happened to him? Last I heard, many years ago, Robert Trujillo accidentally slammed his hand in a car door and wasn't sure about how well he was going to play guitar again.
