I have to vote for DM's choices tho..I am very much a big fan of both old AC and MM.
I like a couple local guitarists too..Tim Sparks, internationally recognized but low key and underated.

eric gales, vinnie moore, too many others to mention. It kinda sucks, but my definition of "underrated" is "not heard by anyone other than guitar players".
Its a complete catastrophe. But Im a professional, I can rise above it. LOL

Hank Sherman and Mike Wead from Mercyful Fate have lots of wailing solos. I think they're underrated.

How about Bill Leverty (firehouse) This guy has never been the feature of any guitar magazine ever, yet he is a great, great guitarist. Plus, he does it live , too......every time,,,,,as does the whole band. Just a great player, songwriter, and live performer. Plus he is really cool to his fans...I met him twice when they were big. And you never have to worry about him showing up too messed up to play great, like so many guitarists. I;ve seen them open for several "bigger" bands, and they always blew everyone away before the night got started. Must have been a hard act to follow, especially for the party hard bands, who sounded less than amazing live.
