If we're talking about stricktly guitarplaying I prefer a certain other guitarist; IMO; Jeff Beck is God. But he doesn't really sing now does he? Except for Hi-Ho Silver Lining of I think.. But I won't make a fuzz.. Tho it's obvious"This ain't no Arsenio Hall show, destroy something!"

Clapton wrote the book on alot of stuff. Before Clapton there was no book.
It's sad to see a bunch of kids on this site who can't show respect for one of the biggest Rock guitar influences that ever was...they would rather listen to cookie monster dethmetal garbage...hey, that's OK....let's see if your heros are being played 35 years from now like Clapton is.Strat God Music

I still listen to Cream records once in a while but I've allways been more into energetic guys like Page, Hendrix etc. A lot of Clapton's stuff is brilliant but too laid back and safe for my taste. I'm a die hard David Gilmour fan, also not flashy but he makes the guitar scream and gives me the goosebumps. Billy Gibbons and Leslie West are also my gods, safe players but have tons of attitude. Clapton's playin is maybe too nice for me"There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
"To be stupid, selfish and have good health are three requirements for happiness, though if stupidity is lacking, all is lost" - Gustave Flaubert

BTW - my heroes ARE still playing! 1984 was almost 25 years ago, so I guess I don't have far to go...

We're talking about a legend here, someone who even influenced Hendrix, and if that doesn't mean anything,go ask your mom,or for you younger guys your granny how impressive he was,and how sore she was the day after.
God only knows how many people Clapton has inspired ,but there's a damn good chance alot of your "heroes" were...and most people nowadays could learn alot about song writing, singing and tasteful melody from this man....sure it's simple music,it's meant to be,but it's about the song and not the wank-off guitar playing.
So open your mind and your ears,it's good for you.My future band shall be known as "One Samich Short Of A Picnic"!

Really? Who is still making out there from 1984 making successful music???? The only few I can think from around 1984 that could come close to the impact Clapton had were EVH,SRV, Randy Rhoads.....Yngwie and Vai had yet to hit,but I would venture to say they had much less of an impact on music that the former.
Let's see EVH(influenced by Clapton btw)? Something about a reunion tour, and basically nothing of any success in a LONG time. Randy -R.I.P. bro......SRV (HUGELY Clapton influence) R.I.P. bro...
Maybe Lynch? Doubt he can even come as close as an influence, but never the less,I think he's playing small places now,and I can't think of the last time I heard him on a non-classic rock type radio station of any merit.
Jake E Lee perhaps...once again I don't see many modern musicians citing him as an influence ,nor heard anything substantial coming from him since Badlands.
While there people may still be "around" and playing "gigs" for the most part,it can't compare to a legend who has been around and valid for 40+ years now,and is still as popular and influential now as ever. The dude writes good songs, which people remember, not whack off guitar solos which only impress the guitar player crowd. He's a blues player, pure and simple, always will be,and yes you CAN do more with one note than a billion, ask B.B. King....better yet go watch the 81 year old man show you how it's done. You might learn something.
And to the rest of you hating on Clapton, piss off.
Really.
Just piss off.
Why in the hell would you come to a thread titled "Clapton still rules" if you think he sucks or whatever? Why come in and piss all over everything just because you don't like it,who gives a flying fuck about your shitty opinion of the man's music?? Go start an Eric Clapton bores me thread or something.
Please.
Move along.

IMHO, the crowd here is not in frequency with Clapton's work or modus operandi.
While I am as big of a fan of hair metal, shredding, heavy metal out the ass axe wielders. I recognize, value and adore the volume of work that EC has provided us.
I wouldn't play endlessly on my car CD player, but every once in a while he gets his fair shake of play. People call him slowhand, etc. but playing with his passion at a speed where you can discern what is going on and clearly feel the notes with such fluidity, it takes a master of his craft. Quite honestly it is sometimes more difficult to play than a Ratt or Dokken solo.
Sort of the same deal with David Gilmour. He is a one in a generation type guitar player.
Different strokes for different folks, that's all.Mr. Patience.... ask for a free consultation.
