Yea, thats a classic solo. I think most of us learned that one around 30 years ago!! It was one of the "must know" solos back in the day. Was that a Mockingbird he was playing??

LOL I just learned it last year.
back in the day it was Iron Maiden and JP and UFO solos I worked on.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives
Yeah, check out both the "Freedom At Point Zero" and "Modern Times" albums for lots of great Craig Chaquico solos. Those were the first two albums with Mickey Thomas on vocals, before Grace Slick rejoined the band (though she appears on a couple of tracks on Modern Times). The song "Save Your Love" on Modern Times, in particular, has some great soloing. But "Jane" is definitely a classic solo. Craig had some bitchin' BC Rich guitars, to be sure.
And actually, the evolution of the band is considerably more complex. It goes something like this:
Early Airplane (psychedelic pop) --> Late Airplane (drugged out jamming minus Marty Balin) --> Early Jefferson Starship (combo of Paul Kantner sci-fi weirdness, sappy Marty Balin love songs, and folky stuff) --> FAPZ/Modern Times (radio friendly hard rock with a touch of Kantner weirdness) --> Late Jefferson Starship (bland AOR rock) --> "Starship" (bland combo of AOR and pop)
Lots of interesting stuff in all eras except for "Non-Jefferson" Starship.

Yup, that was a Mockingbird. That was my very first axe, a 1984 (give or take a year) NJ Series Mockingbird. Nice enough guitar, but I totally sold the shit out of it after buying my second axe, a Satriani sig Ibanez.
Fast forward to when I have somewhat refined what I like playing, and how it sounds, and my SLSMG wastes pretty much anything I've laid my hands on so far. (Sorry PRS, Gibson, etc...)
