I prefer James Murphy's agressive tone, and style over Alex..to be honest.
    +1

And now guys please imagine - what would happen if it were the current lineup (so Nick Barker on drums) -Skolnick and +Murphy...

Huge respect here for Murphy. His playing on "Low" gave new life to Testament...dude is a monster player.

I've always thought that Skolnick and Friedman were the only lead players in thrash metal (notice I didn't say thrash guitarists) who stood out.... all the 80's guitar gods were in hairbands... the usual thrash metal soloing was pretty lame most of the time IMHO... a lot of bumblee sounding shit some were decent players.... but Alex and Friedman were the ones with truly recognizable style and a great sense of melody. Ok Chris Poland had his own thing too but he was doing metal only a couple of years and durning the Megadeth days his style wasn't developed like it's now.
So no matter how good Murph is... people want to see Alex because of is distinctive style.

I know..but I like 'em all..I draw from the well of all shred. I think they all have there own sig. It's matter of identifying with certain players that inspire for whatever reason..simple things really like tone, song writing, phrasing, grooves, divebombs, squeals, open chugs, and justfeel in genral..I'm a firey player because I listen to nothing but firey players..but most important..the song comes first. Some don't require solos such as "The Gathering"..It's a really groove oriented album. and it stuck. It's a part of my own thing..I pick and choose what I like regurgitate it with my own spin...hopefuly!!

With all due respect Endrik - opinions are like arses

the audience would miss the only lead guitar player (along with Marty Friedman) who had style and a lot of musicality in thrash metal
1)Musicality : Imho it's not true - just listen to trail of tears and some other songs on Low.
2)I wrote this whole post because I KNOW Murphy would fit really well as he's used to playing extreme styles - and I doubt that with Barker on board they'd make it easier for the listener

Skolnick to me is 80's , Murphy's Testament is something totally different - it's Thrash mixed with death and 90's groove metal style (think early Machine head - just the feeling )

He's a good player, but other than Disincarnate and Convergence/Feeding the Machine he has spent his career riding the coattails of bands that were already established. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but you're supposed to be a badass when you can spend all of your jam time working on leads as opposed to writing songs (*edit*-good songs). I used to be a huge Murphy fan, but when Disincarnate came out I lost a little faith. I still love listening to him and I'd love to be able to play like he does, but he's not the be all-end all that I thought he was when I was a kid. When it comes to true badassery all the way around, give me Chuck and Alexi. James Murphy is still one of my favorites though. Thanks for posting those videos.
