The fact that this video was taken during the time he was in Quiet Riot is moot, really. The point of my post was that the two are completely different animals. VH, sitting there, saying that Randy was basically a copy of him is nothing more then laughable.

Eddie Van Halen is like a really hot chick with a really fucked up voice. You just want to tape both their mouths shut and watch them be awesome.

Hopefully you're not wanting EVH to be awesome to you in the same way as the hot chick would...

got ya, I never understood the comparision other than both players are extremely talented.

Eddie can be the bigest dick and I don't care...I dont know him personally but strictly from a guitar playing standpoint he kicks ass but I still prefer Randy style

This is a little off topic but I ran across this.

I agree with the "apples & oranges" comments. Both Ed and Randy were amazing players, but for very different reasons.

Randy was a very "structured" player, if you will. And definitely more of an accomplished musician, in the classical sense. Ed was a pretty unstructured player. He had more of a party- or jam-band thing going on, with more flexibility and improvisation.

But we have to seperate the person's guitar playing from their character. Randy seemed to be a very studious and humble person. I think many folks back then might've mistakenly interpreted that as a lack of self-confidence. However, I think Randy was very confident in himself, but just didn't care about "playing the game" like everyone else did.

Ed's schtick was very much about being the best player in that game. He tended to talk everyone else down, and was paranoid about anyone copying him. Partly, this is because everyone really was gunning to be or to top Ed. But, because of his own character flaws, this is also how Ed tended to make himself feel better about himself. Despite having the most cocky attitude of the 80s, Ed probably did not really have a helluva whole lot of self-confidence deep inside. I see a lot of EVH's character flaws - like bashing on a revered dead guy in that interview - being a reflection of a lack of self-confidence. That's probably got a lot to do with Ed's history of substance abuse issues, too.

                  THREAD RESURECTION

After listening to the entire VH interview on youtube it seems to me that ed may have been threatened by randy's playing?
when he talks about allan holdsworth it is nothing but PRAISE(and rightly so!) but he also knows that allan style is NOTHING like his own.
but when randys name comes up(keep in mind randy was starting to get real recognized by the same crowd that loved ED's playing including myself) he gets pretty harsh?(not callled for since not only was randy a gifted player but one of the nicest guys)
anyway i love both of thier playing and do not compare them to one another (like many others here said it is like comparing apples and oranges)
randy was a lot more metal sounding and a lot more classical sounding to me and ed was more rowdy aggressive blues with a lighter classical influence)
both are great and true innovators.
                  i see it like this,
EVH= clapton/hendrix on steriods after many LSD trips thinking they met god
RR= Blackmore/ iommi fused with bach, paganini, mozart, etc with a lot of other great players then taken up a few notches.

as far as eddie being a dick the only that that makes me think that about him is that he abandoned his original quest for finding innovative ways to play the axe.
I dont give a shit about what he says but more about what he plays!
last thing/song he did that i liked was "judgment day"
randy IMHO would have kept getting better and better and we all know how great that would have been<RIP RANDY>
If it's not a CHARVEL then i dont want to play it,look at it or even fuckin THINK about it!

Bingo! I think that's exactly it. In 1982, Ed was the undisputed guitar god of the planet, and Randy's rising popularity (both commercially and guitar-wise) was definitely a threat. I've read numerous EVH interviews over the years and Ed, despite his confident on-stage appearance, is very insecure. Which blows my mind! Considering his talent and all that he has accomplished.

I think most of the points have been covered here but wanted to add my 2 bits:

Even Angus was tapping before VH1 came out. Can't remember off the top of my head if it was on DDDDC or the Let There Be Rock solo.

Both players have attributes that 1000's of guitarists try to emulate. Eddie has his strong points and so does Randy. The only difference is Randy was class and was always learning, taking lessons from classical teachers in the cities they were touring. Ed's a punk wanker who's ambition was to live the rock star dream of sex and drugs/booze.

Either way I dig both of them.

Ed walk away from a young Yngwie when he went up to shake his hand..

Anywhoo Ed stole the thunder from George Lynch when he was dicovered..per George in am GW interview.

Kinda weird about the timing of things. Randy got lucky when Gary Moore turned down Ozzy in '79...to focus on his G force on Jet records. As much as I love Randy that would have been interesting. I always thought George would have made a good Ozzy player. But everything seem to work out for everyone (cept Randy's untimely death) and all have their place in my heart.

I had a Randy solo album called "Load Up"..it was an imported bootleg of misc songs. One was like a disco tune..well it was during that time. I sold all my vinyl..that was one of many one I wished I kept! Another was "Starfleet" w/ Eddie and Brian May jammin'. That particilar song was written for a cartoon.
"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
                        Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!

"Well, your friend would have Bell's Palsy, which is a facial paralysis, not "Balls Pelsy" like we're joking about here." Toejam's attempt at sensitivity.

The BEST Randy/Ozzy tune was "You Looking At Me Looking At You." That solo and the entire DOAM song STILL bring goosebumps to my arms.

It was like all the notes he played spoke to you.

that is why he drank so much and got high
Ed felt more at ease among fans, other players and whomever when he was lit.
and he was a lot more arroggant drunk than he ever was sober.
FWIW, most of what eddie has said i never took to heart since i know what it is like to have one too many and then talk to people,i am a real ass wipe and cant play for shit when i drink so thats why i stopped drinking
i have seen/heard quite a few ed interviews where he is sober and a lot more down to earth
I think pro players should just listen to frank zappa and "shut up and play yer guitar!"

First, I'll say that I love Randy's guitar playing and thought he did some fantastic writing with Ozzy. But...Randy was nowhere near in Eddie's league in terms of setting the world on fire. Randy had absolutely TERRIBLE guitar tone whereas Eddie had crushing good tone. Randy's pseudo-neo-classical influence has always been highly overrated IMO - there were a number of guys before him that were more melodic and technically more accomplished (Uli and Schenker spring to mind quickly).
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

Ed was born with the magic touch... he would play only one note.. or even fart on the pickups and people could recognize it's him... Randy had to write long epic guitar solos to make his point
