I agree with Larz here ... VH sounded like a real ass saying Randy learned everything from him. Lost alot of respect for him right there. Sorry I ever heard that actually.

VH was very innovative and exciting. Randy was classy and an awesome songwriter. Those 2 Ozzy albums are still 2 of my all-time favs !!!

Long live the memory of Randy !!!!!

half of Eddie's repertoire is tricks and flash. that's cool, and yes his rhythms are great but Randy's classical training and discipline shows through in his more melodic runs and solos.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

in terms of true classical training and Randy wanting to leave Ozzy to go to UCLA to persue that field, I think he would have been blown away when he would have seen what attaining a masters degree in classical music entails. there are people who are just ridiculously incredible on guitar in that field and it would have taken Randy a while to score that degree. It's a whole different ballgame. He was one of the cleanest players i've ever heard live though when it comes to rock.
Not helping the situation since 1965!

His leads were more flashy and off the cuff... not too much melody there, especially in his early stuff.
+1 thanks, now I don't have to write all that

              I remeber a quote that Randy said.."Whenver I do a solo I pretend I'm Eddie Van Halen"..

to me they were apples and oranges really..similar in a few ways. Randy is very structred. Ed called his style"Falling down the seps and landing on your feet"..

That guy that interviewed Ed sounded like a real ball of fire...what a douche.. Whatever Ed said..he was like "Yeah"..

              Did you know Randy

Ed..yeah that poor guy, he had to be acting like a dick in that plane ya know...
              "yeah"
Ed..He's prolly up their jammin and shit and fuckin' around with Bonham..
              "yeah"
Ed..he was honest, he said everything he knew he learned from me.
              "yeah"
              Ed..what do you think?
"oh yeah, when I heard him I thought he was just copying you"
              Ed.."yeah"
              "yeah"
              Ed..yeah?
              "yeah.
Ed..but that's cool because I learned shit too.
              "yeah"
              Ed.."yeah?"
              "yeah".

              WTF??!!
"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
              Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!

"Well, your friend would have Bell's Palsy, which is a facial paralysis, not "Balls Pelsy" like we're joking about here." Toejam's attempt at sensitivity.

Randy has always come across as a humble man. He was who he was, and he did not make a big deal about it. When I think of Randy, I think 'discipline' too. He was an articulate, detailed musician. DOAM is one that I listen closely to even after all of these years. The musical nuance that Randy laid down was something that just stuck with me. The classical training showed in his style, through and through.

While I like Ed, and I consider their playing like apples and oranges, Randy is the one I prefer. I wish that he had survived as I can only dream of where Randy would have gone. He was considering leaving Ozzy after the tour to continue his classical training, even hitting classical teachers while bouncing from city to city while touring.

I think Randy, I think dedication to his playing. He was one of the most dedicated players I have ever heard.

Also, he gave us this killer V to remember him by.

BTW, lame interview, interviewer and interviewee. Hook a hose to it and clean the carpets, it sucked that much.

Agreed. Randy was only getting started. What a loss.......

that was when he was in QR. Although you can hear Randy in that I think he became a much better player after being with Ozzy for a while.

Got an old Guitar For the Practicing Musician with an interview with Randy in it.. says his influences were mainly Leslie West, Schenker, the guys from the Alice Cooper Band, BeBop Deluxe and then he comments that he gets compared to Ed whenever he does a tapping thing or dives the bar.

It should be noted Randy tapped using the side of his pick and not his fingers. I think this is why his tapping always sounded a bit different then Eds. In regards to Ed being more innovative, you could also argue Randy really torched off the whole neo classical style. You could also say that Rhoad's also had a heavy influence on guitar design, though not quite to the degree of Ed. All and all, they are great players, but it would be hard to pick who was more innovative or had a bigger influence.

Man, I find comparing Eddie and Randy almost like comparing apples and oranges. Eddie just comes off sounding like an ass, to me, making those comments.
                              I'm not Ron!

Van Halen comes off as a total prick in that interview.

I really don't see any resemblance between his playing and Randy's.

What an arrogant shit. Learnt everything he learnt from him. Wanker.
