  • To ALL Prog Metal fans..a topic of interest

I posted this repsonse in the Cynic thread, but believe it may be overlooked. It is something I amoung other members are passionate about..Great metal bands with high caliber skill levels...

    Let's begin,

Being that I have devoted my fuggin' life to metal. I have listened with unbiased ears and open mind and found that highest caliber muscianship is not exclusive to power/prog bands. Many of those fans are unaware and don't acknowledge that this is equal across the entrire metal spectrum.

Whenever you say the word Rush or Dream Theater one instantly thinks prog metal and they're correct...but it goes far beyonds bands in the same genre as Symphony X , Pagans Mind, Lanfear, Threshold, Time requiem, Majestic, Space Oddessy, Circus Maximus, Vanden Plas and many of similar styles...Watchtower!!

There is the same calibre musciansip in other styles of music that most don't consider as equals. I think it's a shame, therfore I'm adressing it. I see it as you loss , my freinds, but it doesn't have to be.

I have a insane Prog Power friend that some here know ..his name is "Krusty"..he loves his "Prog" and he's a great prog drummer. Not long ago he loathed any kind of "harsh" vocals no matter what. I do to in the wrong context, it's just fuggin' grating. But bands like Cynic who made this style accessible. Some may not be sold on this vid , which is a mere glimpse..just like any other unfamilar "good" band, you must hear more to know what they're about.

Krusty's first progressive "death" band he embraced was Into Eternity..prolly because there is a mix of both clean and harsh and the music is pretty challenging. Then he told me he bought the new Mercenary which he really liked..it's the ligher side of this style so I can see that...but it's a start. I broadened his mind, which is cool. Then he bought the new Martyr cd and loves it and almost in that same beathe told me that he is so disappointed in the new Kamelot, who he's opening for in a couple days. So he bought two cds in one day one of his faves that he was bummed about and a cd he wouldn't even gave a chance just a year ago. I owned and heard enough to distint good from crap..Then you have awesome..and "awesome" is rarely subjective especialy when applied to skill level and writing.

So any of you want to expand your progressive and love challenging music..let me share me faves with you.

I will touch on some ..NOT all.

Atheist..all 3 are re-issued, no need to drop $200 on Ebay.
Arsis..this is the music on HHB with the ballerinas in
    harmony with that intense music.
Alarum..this is a Cynic lovers wet dream..
Augury..very cool tech prog death band
Capharnaum..on the same willowtip roster with Arsis.
Death..a kid that blossomed into a genius, his life cut short.
Coroner..they progressed until they broke up in '95.
    Extol..awesome Christian progressive band...harsh vox.
Farmakon...Steve DiGiorgio is in it...there ya go.
Gory Blister..don't let the name fool you..these dagos throw down!
    Lunaris..very nice!
    Martyr...wow!
Necrophagist..It'll make your head spin like Linda Blair.
    Nocturnus..start with .."The Key"!!!
    Sadist.."Beyond the light"
Sadus..Steve DiGiorgio always seems to show with stuff like this.
Sceptic..any fan of Coroner should love these guys..
Symbyosis..my very FAVE all that is tech prog death metal!!!
Theory in Practice..the name speaks for itself..insane stuff!
    Thought Chamber..cool stuff...DiGiorgio is that U?
Twisted Into Form..members of Extol and Spiral Archtect..'nuff said.
Wastefall..start w/"self exile", like a mix of Opeth and Nevermore.

Just a few years ago I was told that Arch Enemy completely sucks balls by SO many (harsh vox), those same people fucking LOVE that band, including my wife!

So, it doesn't hurt to kick shit around and try new shit..once that door in opened you'll be even more accepting to even more "extreme" music..because of the skill levels.. trust me..I been there, and many of my friends

I don't expect everyone to be blown away at first listen..in fact I expect what I already know and heard so many times before.."That fucking band sucks!!"..and in a few years you'll be playing that shit..or wanting to!

This almost needs it's own thread...hmmm. we;ll see where this goes first.

I'm not there yet - screaming vocals still rub me the wrong way (except for COB).

But I do agree with you regarding stellar players in metal bands - Zakk Wylde is alot better than most people think when you actually see him play with Ozzy or BLS - the guy has frkkn CHOPS.

Zakk is a natural that came from the same school I did..all his "heros" are mine..including Frank Marino..who you can definitely him in his playing without a doubt.

The problem with the Ozzy camp is they hired writers instead of letting Zakk do his thing..Zakk wanted to beat up Dave Grohl..I laughed my ass off when I read that one.

I remember Zakk said something to effect ..Can you imagine having a producer going to Ed and saying here we hired this guy to write this for you.. I had to play that peice of shit song that Dave Grohl fucking wrote every night on tour..wasn't he in Shitvana..let me hear Dave Grohl play the solo to Mr Crowley...he was really going off...I was really laughing when I was reading that...I can see his point. I don't know what song he's referring to. I listen to earlier Ozzy..nothing passed NRFTW really...The first Zakk albulm is my fave Zakk/Ozzy release..that and Just say Ozzy!

I have a recording of Zakk with Yngwiie with Derek Sherinian of Dream Theater..and he is blazing like mad. yes, there is much more to him than Ozzy and BLS..just watching him noodle around sounds best to me...one of my many faves..he's on my list for sure...and a influence I guess, because I like to squeal ALOT..used to drive John crazy with that, but that's what I do.

You see, COB opened that door that wasn't opened before..you like the guitar playing and all of a sudden you can't imgaine clean vocals with COB..it wouldn't be the same...see, that exactly what I mean man..there will be other COBs coming your way that you will embrace..that door is opened man..you'll see!!

It already started..belive there is some amazing bands with harsh vox that are equal to or even better than COB..and there are horrid ones that just sound pathetic..actually there is more horribl;e one than good ones.

So if you want to know the good ones..you are in the right place because I will make sure we will guide you in the right direction..I will not steer you wrong I promise!

I already have bands that you will dig if you like COB..

Very cool list! I recently bought the new Scar Symmetry on impulse when I saw it cheap at a store and was hooked instantly.

Now if we're talking skill level, we should not forget to mention Spawn of Possession! They have two albums out, "Cabinet" and "Noctambulant", both of which are mindblowing.

Bill - I'll try to check out some clips of those bands. I'm not really into the guttaral scream thing - Russell Allen on the latest Sym X is about the closest I can get to that type of vocals.

Still, your knowledge of the metal world in all its forms is impressive.

Bill, as always an impressive list. Everything i know and love of this genre is already in it. Some very cool bands although probably Nocturnus, Death, Necrophagist and Sceptic and my favourites.

Bill if you have some time, check out Heresy. http://www.heresy-online.com/main.html

You can download three complete songs in the download section. Although they are not progressive they may not fit into this topic but i think you may like them. Give "Back-Stree Abortion" a listen, it's my favourite out of those three songs although all of them are very cool. Hope you will like this.

I have to, as always, give it up for my Boston-area homeboys Revocation:

REVOCATION's profile including the latest music, albums, songs, music videos and more updates.

Technical thrash/death with jazzy tinge and some AWESOME playing all around. In addition, the guitarist/vocalist Dave Davidson plays a WR1. \m/

Yeah, if Russell is too harsh, then I don't see how you can listen to any metal but Kamelot

Opeth got me past my dislike of growls. I still can't stand the metalcore scream though.

And Bill: Watchtower rules, don't diss 'em Energetic Disassembly was my favorite song for quite a while.

Has Andromeda been mentioned yet? Fantastic prog band out of Scandinavia.

Spive..I got all three Andromeda releases..your boy on guitar was with uber growler Johan Liva (Arch Enemy) in Non Exist..played kick ass on that stuff..I liked his playing better with Liva than I do in his own gig..which is good too. Man, I screamed like a little girl when I finally found Watchtower's "Energetic Disassembly"..I already had "Control and Resistance"..but you better tell me you have Spastic Ink!!!

OK be back later..I must bathe and dine!

I love Russell..dude is awesome..but you can't throw down with Jorne Lande..that dude is too fuggin' good..he's the only singer who makes me feel gay...like I wanna cry or some shit..and that's not right!

No man should do that to the Bill Z Bub!!
