  • Ed playing Unchained - how did he...?

Did he change guitars to play it in drop D or did he roll back that fine tuner of the high E string back in the day? I know that he now uses the D-Tuner for that, but how did he do it in the old days???

I have the video of there '83 US Festival concert, and I think he change guitars to one of all the Franki replacas that he had. I was a quick change too.

I also noticed this on the US festival footage. If you watch the Unchained video from Oakland '81, he uses a different guitar but at US '83, it looks like he's using Frankie for the whole show. ??

Either or. Since his trem is set to dive only, he could just do it through the fine tuner. If I remember right, when I saw them on the Diver Down tour, he switched guitars to the black and white one with the circles that he plays in the video before the song. Making me think he had a dedicated drop-D tuned guitar. At least back then...
      I'm angry because you're stupid

If you watch Live without a net, it is the same deal on the song 5150. He looks to be using the 5150 guitar but try playing a long to it and you find that not only is the E dropped to D but everything is tuned 1/2 a step down.
Next song and the guitar is back to normal A 440.
I saw them on the 1984 tour and they opened with Unchained that night. It did not look like he switched guitars to go into the next song because there was no break in it. Wonder how he did it ?

During the "Live without a net" Van Hagar era, Ed was a full fledged Kramer endorsee which solves a lot of those mysteries if you look at his collection...

This is his famous 5150 Kramer.

This is his 1984 Kramer, as you can see both guitars have matching striping so it's possible for him to have used one of those as his Dropped D guitar using the other in Normal tuning with his Steinberger as back up.

EVH had more Kramers like that at his disposal at that time.

If you want that guitar nab a 1984 Reissue. I did and its about the best sounding guitar ive got. Definately has a very BROWN tone to it and screams Eddie.

If you recall in the LWOAN concert in the song "Can't Drive 55" Ed brakes que looks to be de B or G string in mid song and in the solo of Sammy he changes guitar and grabs the Steinberger. I guess it was the closes one he pick up from the rack insted of another Kramer striped guitar.

I'll get one one day, expecially now that the headstock is smalle now and looks more like Eds one.

He used atleast 3 guitar ones. The red & white, the mini les paul and the double neck. Being he is wireless, it doesn't take but a sec to swap guitars and turn on the transmitter.

Ok, let me explain it slowly.........

Here is the first song from US '83 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJVDSsoM9II

Here is the second - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45U2bRQ__F4

Both are with Frankie. Obviously, if he broke out a mini LP or doubleneck, there wouldn't be any confusion.

Or even if he used a different guitar, a la Unchained '81 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfYjgcOaIUU

But he didn't, he uses Frankie for both and I doubt they waited a couple minutes (especially at the beginning of a set) for him to retune. So how did he do it?

in the US festival clip at the end of Romeos Delight you can hear him drop tune the E string down to a D.
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?
