  • I have a new found respect for Yngvie

My 7 string is in with my tech getting some "adjustments" and hardware changed so I'm stuck playing nothing but my 6 stringers for the next few days, so I decided to jam with some Yngwie (which I haven't done for a
long time) and man it's humbling.
I've been jamming to "Far Beyond the Sun" ,"Perpetual" and "I'll see the light tonight" this morning and god do I suck.
It really is eye opening at how good, no how great his left/right hand coordination really is.

oh well back to shred 101 for me
Looks like I'll be focusing on this guy for a while
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

Yngwie is awesome. Still one of my fav guitarists. I saw him live in 2006 and he looked great and played great, not sloppy or anything. It was a long show too, I heard many many notes haha.

YJM, still to this day my Fav guitarist. Id say my biggest influence. Yeah he's gotten out of shape over the years, but still enjoy his style.I have a YJM Strat since 88' bought brand new and still mint. My Avatar is "Alcatrazz" era. Hiroshima and Bigfoot are my Fav songs.

One thing about his playing that really astonishes me is the fact that he doesn't seem to use his fret hand pinky finger nearly as much as you would expect from a shredder of his caliber. That's not to say that he doesn't use his pinky, it's just that I notice he does alot of position shifting and stretching with the 3rd finger rather than employing a strict "one fret per finger" technique.
Regardless, an incredible player IMO who makes it look effortless.

Couldnt agree more, 100% with you. How awseome is this from the 70's, his playing and tone & style is still nothing short of awesome and alot of respect to him as a great guy and not cocky, but a true musician.

yup I've been an Yngwie fan from way back.
saw him 7 times, the best show was at LAmour in 88 for Odyssey.

lately I'm not as much into his new stuff, but up through Facing the Animal that was some good shit. and yeah how impossible is his playing, jesus he's so fluid and fast.

and yeah I love that Alcatrazz album, General Hospital and Too Young to Die, Hiroshima, Kree Nakoorie, that is a top 5 album for me.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

+1 Uli Jon Roth! he started the whole Neo-Classical rock guitar style!

I like Yngwie a lot. Especially his riffs and how he uses classical progressions in rock songs. I've never liked his soloing too much though. The technical ability is amazing but the runs are often predictable. Hangar 18 area 51 has an amazing solo by him.

He makes it look so easy. He's an incredible player - lots of wicked ideas in his lead work.

I have a new found respect for Yngwie

Who can mistake Yngwie's sound and style?

Yngwie synthesized and popularized the sounds and approach of Blackmore, Roth and Schenker in a way that no one had done before. A fully realized approach- tone, lead style AND compositional approach. His career has had its ups and downs, but he still sounds great and plays every bit as well (or better) as he did when he started.

For the modern guitar era of hard rock/metal, he's right up there with Rhoads and Van Halen in terms of influence.
