Yngwie is just a frickin' force of nature. No other player has had the same profound effect on me - not Randy, Eddie or Steve. I love them all, but Yngwie just knocked me sideways.
I'm not sure that some of our younger members fully appreciate the impact that he had back in the mid/late 80's. The first time you heard the guy, everything changed. Being a guitarist became a lot more exciting, and a bloody sight more difficult.....

Well said. I didn't play guitar back then but I can imagine the shock when hearing fast 5 string arpeggios played all over the neck for the first time. I think he pretty much started the whole wide arpeggio thing or am I wrong?

This is a great point, and I think it goes for Ed & Randy, too. There was just something special about being a youngster & seeing those guys right when they hit. It totally shook up your world. So much has happened since then that a lot of people are jaded. There are lots of awesome players who keep raising the bar in small increments, but those huge jumps are something special when you're there to see them!

totally. hearing "rising force" for the first time totally changed me as a player. i went from being a guitarist to being a songwriter because i knew i would never practice enough to reach that level. malmsteen forever changed lead guitar playing....
          GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

          and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

You got that right! I remember the first time I heard him..... a local radio station was previewing a song (Black Star) from his upcoming Rising Force album. Must have been around '83 or '84. I COULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT I WAS HEARING!!!

Same for me, he's been one of my hero, since then. There have been a lot of new shredders out since him (and many clones), but Yngwie is always playing with balls and attitude while others don't. Seeing him live was a humbling experience, also him playing Hendrix showed that he can play very well without being a mechanical shredder.

I first heard of him in G3...And all I saw was a "big" guy playing a little strat with his teeth and unleashing kicks in the air before breaking his guitar..

At first I thought he was just wayy to wank. But now he is one of my favourites alongside Jason Becker and Paul Gilbert. Got some great songs to learn off too..

Icarus Dream Suite did it for me... blew my mind. He spawned a new generation of wannabe players, but nobody has the same amount of intensity and fire.

I remember when "Black Star" came out in the "Guitar Player" magazine, it was a CD size vinyl record, that was it from there. The World changed after that, I remember saying Eddie who? I never knew how to correctly pronounce his name till I heard him say it on a Radio show "King Bisket Flour Hour" remember that?

I've always had the "empty virtuoso" opinion of him. Just arpeggios over and over and over. Maybe I need to check him out again.

I reneber when Steeler just came out..I was blown away!!!

I been a fan since but he's very redundant...I bought every single thing he has ever done..including the expensive import shit!

Uli Roth's version of Vivaldi's four seasons'Metamorphosis"..it's untouchable!

Yngwie doesn't have the feel, emotion and restraint and pitch Uli has...Yngwie is more over the top , firey, and metal..even when doing his classical stuff, he really doesn't seem to hold back and overplays which is awesome but boring..He's either on 10 or laid back when he does his acoustic stuff..sometimes.

Uli is much more dynamic and creative ..he's quirky as hell, but completely unmatched ..he plays for the music and not just a "show off" IMO!!!!

Great player, somewhat repetitive but what the hell!

I met him a few years back at a gig I was invited backstage. Meeting him ruined it for me. He struck me a a major jerk. His wife's Turkish, but she has adopted an English name and refused to speak Turkish to any of the crew, which pissed me off no end. Too much rock star in that camp for me.
I feel festive all year round. Deal with it.

I love Malmsteen, especially his out of control ego. On the G3 tour he was walking all over Vai & Satriani - totally owning the stage. He had no respect for the fact that they may be wanting to solo during the jams. His abilities go without saying - he is godlike.

Yngwie gave Stevie and Satch a spanking on that show..he was fuggin' unstoppable..he's a bull in a china shop..

He did not give one fuck about letting them breathe...he does not play fair. What he did was both awesome and somewhat selfish...but THAT is the Yngwinator!
