Yes, the G-3 tour gave him a shot in the arm- but it also was great for Satch and Steve. Of course they knew he's walk all over them - that's Yngwie - Satch was quoted 20 years ago saying Yng was the best of the best.
But remember that unlike most prolific guitar players, Yngwie can READ ,WRITE, COMPOSE ON PAPER ( that means he can sit at a table with no instruments and literally write out a fully orchestrated chart with no mistakes like Mozart did), the dude has his theory down.
He also plays drums, piano, cello, violin.
Yes, Aria..George is sporting his on the back of the Tooth and Nail vinyl.
Michael Anthony played Aria too.
Did Aria make those weird explorer shaped guitars..they weren't a whole slab body. it was basically that shape's frame and just enough wood down the center for the bridge and pups and ect..those maight have beem guild ..I forgot...from mid 80's

The Yng is awesome.
Absolutely, Uli as well..he did that wrote classical oriented musis score with orcehestra early 90's!
I have both clasical /orchestra releases..paid 45 bucks for for the first one..Japanese only. Which was re-issue domestic for aprox 14 bucks several years later. At least I had it when It came out..who knew. Then he did another one.
Yngwie toured came here shorty after his slot with Dio on the Magica tour. John was there but Jorn Lande went after him on stage and was escorted out by the po po. Pissed he didn't get much stage time due to Yngwie's countless instrumentals which is more than half his set sometimes. So he rushed him and they went to blows..Yngwie just kept playin' soon afterwards..I heard alot about it..wish I was there to see that one!!!
John net and spoke with the Yng..he said he was cool as hell..I even think it was that show..I dunno.

I remember when "Black Star" came out in the "Guitar Player" magazine, it was a CD size vinyl record, that was it from there. The World changed after that, I remember saying Eddie who? I never knew how to correctly pronounce his name till I heard him say it on a Radio show "King Bisket Flour Hour" remember that?
Ahhhhh, The King Bisket Flower Hour. Man that was a cool show. Fuck i'm getting old! I freaked out the first time I heard Malmsteen, he played so fast i thought it was tripping, or having a flashback, for those who know what they are. His playing certainly had an impact on my playing.
Your right Nick, although I play a lot of that style from my own stuff playing going back covering Yngwies stuff keeps you on you toes and you technique up to snuff.
To me personally, the only 2 players to have a profound affect on my playing were Randy Rhoads and Yngwie Malmsteen. Yngwie has the great vibrato, perfect pitch on his bends and an exellecent sense of melody. It always irks me when people bash Yngwie for havin "no feel" as I dont know what people are listening to but it you puting Rising Force or Marching out and you don't hear any feeling you git to be deaf. Saying Yngwie has no feeling is like saying Bach, Mozart and Vivaldi habve no feeling I admit sometimes Yngwie seems to gets stuck just cramming in the notes at times I appreciate his slower more melodic stuff ala Icarus Dream Suite etc. I thought Yngwie blew goat balls on his Mr Crowley cover and don't care for his bluesy stuff but there is no one in neo-classical better that Yngwie in my book.
The two mentiond dudes lead me classical music and that is where my heart is at and I've been in that mode for years. Its funny how you can play a violin or cello concerto thru a hi gain amp and people think your're ripping off Yngwie..

I agree Shawn, you can't play Yngwie and play it "stiff" at all or it will
sound like shit. I think he has great feel, it's just the same thing over and
over again tht probably turns some people off.
Learning this stuff has opened my eyes to some weaknesses in my own
playing that I otherwise wouldn't have really noticed by playing other styles.
I still can't play it perfectly up to speed :ROTF: but it is getting there slowly but surely.
My first exposure was hearing "Island in the Sun" on a local radio station back in high school. I loved the playing and his tone was very different. I got lucky and scored a copy of the first Alcatrazz disc on vinyl and then it was all downhill from there - I bought all of his stuff.
I regretted that I never got the opportunity to see him live in the '80's. But I finally got to see him with on the G3 tour a few years ago. I actually bid my whole work schedule around that show and threatened to call in sick if I had to.
Yeah Yngwie is fucking good. And boring after a couple songs. I love his accoustical stuff. And I saw him with Satch and Vai and yeah you could tell the difference - Yngwie plays much harder and with more intensity and certainly way better sweeps as well as alternate picking.
But as far as fire goes Frank Marino has just as much fire as Yngwie in my opinion.

I totally remember getting that Black Star mini record from the magazine.
I was about 14 at the time, been playing for about two years and it blew me away as did most of that album, Icarus, Far Beyond the Sun, etc. How do I slow this down to quarter speed so I can see what the hell he is doing?
Also at the time I remember thinking, man this vocalist sucks.
