Lynch or Campbell??

i think campbell wrote cooler songs with dio, but loses points for the fact every dio album virtally sounds the same, and i can see why he left because of that, but he did have an awesome tone on those early albums, however he again loses ppoins for the fact that almost half of dio's first abum (stand up and shout holy diver don't talk to strangers) were actually intitially written by jake e lee, who i think should be afdded to this discussion because his two ozzy albums smoke

both campbell and george are fairly versatile, tho i'd give campbell more points on this as he's been on three wholly diffeent sounding bands, tho how much he wrote on the other two i don't know, not much for whitesnake i think.

george always had a great uniqueness in his playing and tone, tho sometimes he's lacked a very cutting edge in his rythm writing, he's always been on the verge of heavy awesomness at times but not quite gone that far...but that was dokken for you always pertaining to the more melodic stuff, i don't like his lynch mob and beyond tone tho (i don't know about cambell's) lynch always looked damn cool tho, and had very cool guitars (and trousers for that matter hehe) and was probably the more technical of the two

Anyone else besides me heard his solo album? Couple that with Lynch's "Furious George", and you've got some really tasty stuff.


i have hius solo album its very good inplaces if a little laughable at times with the silly beast voice. i really .like i will remember - that is a beautiful piece of music

vivian campbell is more versatile, lynch is great but i prefer campbell he's more humble.

Viv's playing with Whitesnake was pretty kick ass too.
He didn't seem to have any issues with backing up Mr. Vai as well.
No ego, just a great guitar player.
I have Viv's solo album as well... good stuff.

Without a doubt in my mind.....Lynch. Way better tone,more unique style.
Campbell's a fine guitarist but to me Lynch was so good he was able to
make Dokken's stuff listenable. Also,I never particularly cared for Viv's
rythmn tone.

Each was a tremendous player in his own right. I would say that while Vivian never reached true guitar-hero status like Lynch (who remains relevant to this day), they both had a lot to offer.

Campbell:
The songwriting and lead playing on the first three Dio albums with Vivian
are classic, and even if he had never done another thing, I think this work was enough to cement his place in metal guitar history. Some cool rhythm playing and very memorable leads.

Lynch:
A true guitar legend. Like him (and Don Dokken for that matter) or not, Lynch's songwriting and lead playing on the Dokken albums influenced an entire generation of players. Adventurous and commercially viable at the same time-not an easy feat. He also accomplished something very few have been able to do- that is, putting together a successful band (Lynch Mob) after the demise of his first project.

All in all, they were probably more similar than different. Both had a strong blues influence, were great at harmonics, employed tasteful/sparing use of the bar and wrote generally melodic and tasteful leads with cutting-edge (at least for the time!) chops.

In summary, two of the key players that made the music and lead guitar scene of the 80s what it was- a great time for music!

Awesome technique, tone, great taste, and a god given feel.
Lynch is the complete package.

I highly recommend "Riverdogs" to any Campbell fans who may be looking for something other than his Dio/Def Leppard work. While not as heavy as his stuff with Dio, his guitar playing is stellar none the less.

Yeah... Riverdogs was definately a showcase of Viv's work. He is a badass player with a lot of feel. Lynch is one of those guys that can be playing behind a curtin and you will know it is him. I love Viv, I think he smokes but, he really doesn't do anything for me today. Overall, the catalog of his playing is remarkable.

Interesting. While I agree that Jake was involved with Dio in the very early stages of RJD's solo band (before Campbell was given the job), I fail to see any songwriting credits for Lee on the Holy Diver liner notes.

I just don't get the appeal that Lynch has to people - he's a great player for sure, but to my ears he's just not interesting or melodic at all, and his playing just bores me as it all sounds the same.

So for me, Campbell it is then!
