  • Night Ranger with Reb - Picture Heavy

Night Ranger played in Denver last weekend as a part of "A Taste of Colorado", an annual food festival held in the city.

My sixteen year old son (Kyle) is a HUGE Reb Beach fan (truly fanatical...he absolutely idolizes the guy and is trying to learn most of his material) but he didn't know Reb was playing with Night Ranger. We got there early and got a spot in the front row, right where Jeff Watson would normally be set up. When Reb came out to soundcheck, Kyle just about fell over. Reb was super cool and was talking to us from the stage. During the show, he threw 3 picks to Kyle and seemed to play right to him frequently...lots of eye contact and pointing. At one point, Reb wiped his face off with a towel and had a big string hanging from his goatee. I gestured to him by wiping off my own chin...he picked up on it but kept wiping the wrong side! Finally he got it, made an "oops" gesture, and gave the thumbs up...it was pretty funny.

Even cooler, Kyle had asked him if they could get a picture together which Reb said no problem to after the show. About 20 minutes after they left the stage, he came out and hung out for a while, took a few pics with Kyle, and just bs'd in general. I must say he was one of the coolest "rock stars" I ever met. Very humble and down to earth with zero ego. He was super appreciative of the praise that Kyle heaped on him and said he couldn't believe he was even relevant to a modern teenager.
A very cool experience that made a teenage boy about as happy as he could ever be...thanks Reb!!!

As for the show itself, I was very impressed. They were very high energy and played great. Jack Blades is an awesome front man and Gillis still shines as well as he ever did. If you get a chance to check them out, do it.

The pics were taken on my Treo so they are not the greatest quality but still cool. Here you go:

Rupe: Thanx for posting the pix and story. I saw Reb years ago at S.P.A.C.And this was the tour with "Dokken" "Cinderella" "Poision" etc and Reb just smoked, I gained new respect after that. He was dead on and pinched every harmonic perfect.
I have also read in here that a couple members jammed with him,Reb played his LP on stage and was a real nice guy too.. .autographing and pix, real down to earth.

Excellent story! I love to hear about Rock Stars giving it back like that. Part of the job, if you ask me. And one they should do with a smile on their face...

Did your son have Reb autograph is shoe??? It kinda looks like he doesn't want to...
      I'm angry because you're stupid

Yeah it does look that way, too funny. Actually, it was Reb's idea to sign the shoe since he couldn't find anything else to sign (Kyle didn't want the OzzFest shirt signed).

I agree that they should take time to meet and greet fans...Reb went the extra mile and actually hung out for quite some time. It wasn't like he was going through the motions...he was engaged and asking questions. Nobody really knew who he was so it was just us talking to him, very cool.

Cool story, and those are actually some pretty decent pics. Thanks!
I saw Reb playing in Whitesnake not too long ago (last year?). I bet he has some great stories, playing in so many pro level bands.

That's too funny...and true! One of the things he talked about was the Ibanez RBM model (the good one) vs. the Suhr. He said that although he thought the Ibanez was way cooler, the Suhr is a much better guitar (no surprise there). Kyle now has his eyes set on one but was a bit shocked when he went to the website and saw an MSRP of $4350 Anyone know what these go for on the street?

One thing that I found interesting was his rig and tone. He was playing through a Marshall DSL (I thought he typically used Suhr amps as well as the guitars) and sounded pretty bad warming up and sound checking. Once the band started, the "ratty" sounding tone that he had all of a sudden sat perfectly in the mix...kinda cool. Perhaps NR is endorsed by Marshall for this tour as Brad had a 900 series head on his side of the stage (but it was a dummy...he had a Boogie head behind the drums that he actually used).

not a problem. He could get that much on ebay for his autographed shoe, right?

great story, Rupe. Big Reb fan here. I just wish any of the many bands he has played with in the last couple of years (WS, NR, Dokken, The Mob, Winger again) would tour over here
                    Hail yesterday

Last time I saw them this was the line-up as well. All of them blew me and my wife away except for Dokken - they blew chunks.

Fantastic story too!! Something your son will remember the rest of his life.
My future band shall be known as "One Samich Short Of A Picnic"!
