      Ritchie Blackmore, without a doubt!

Also, I'd put Steve Lukather on the list, too, of "masters of the whammy bar".
Takeoffs are optional but landings are mandatory.

Gillis is the Master, by a long shot.

many other good ones, but no one does it like Gillis.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

I saw Ritchie Blackmore eight times between 1971 - 1974 (I think??) and he changed guitars every song, each concert. They were all Strats.

In addition to the guys already mentioned

                        Steve Hackett
That man re-invented hiw whole style, using the whammy to add very dramatic effects on his solos. He used to play a strat but currently employs a Custom Les paul with a Floyd Rose.

Steve Hackett, Paul Gilbert, Nuno Bettencourt, John Paul Jones play Darktown at Guitar Wars Concert. Sick dark creepy song.

Note also who else is playing here...

Floyd Rose lived in reno before moving to Seattle, he built the first FR trem here in Reno, the owner of bizarre guitar here has it, it's on a Les Paul, he has a framed letter from Floyd, telling him to take good care of number one, just an interesting bit of trivia I thought I would pass on.

In a very speed metal Kahler way:

                                Kerry King
