Masters of the whammy bar

I saw Ritchie Blackmore eight times between 1971 - 1974 (I think??) and he changed guitars every song, each concert. They were all Strats.

SUNSHINE INN ASBURY PARK 1970'S - he broke a Strat over his knee after trying like tens times. Before it hit the floor the roady was handing him another.

What does this have to do with WHAMMY??

Breaking guitars has little to do with whammy bars, though Ritchie would usually heap on some bar abuse before the death of a guitar.

But as for the musical application of the bar, go back and really listen to his playing, either studio or live albums and either with Purple or Rainbow. Ritchie was a user of the vibrato bar. In fact, he used to have custom trem arms made because he was breaking the stock Fender arms.

Ritche was actually playing ES-335's before he got a Strat from Eric Clapton. He's said in interviews that it was the tone of the Strat and the vibrato bar that caused him to stick with Strats.
