I love the early Def Lepp, was a huge fan back then when Pyromania rocked the world, just one of those insanely unique albums that came out of nowhere, saw several shows way back then, but haven't really kept up with them since the Adrenalize record.

My wife has been a big Lep fan since back in the 'day. So I've seen them 2 or 3 times in the last few years. I like them myself, but I'm not a big fan or anything.

They put on a very good live show, although highly processed (especially the vocals). Even my wife will admit Joe's voice ain't there anymore, though. He may be able to pull it out for recordings, but not consistently live. Phil is cool. Viv always seems like he's just going through the motions for a paycheck. It is blatently obvious that he's just not into the music anymore. And, for that reason, I really think he should bow out. Some new and enthusastic blood there might help light a fire for them.

I think Phil is a great guitar player.

Another Lep fan here... but for me after Histery it's not the same

What I really don't understand is how or who brainwashed Viv in a way that he hates what he did in Dio. Could you imagine the Viv that we all love (back in Dio) playing like that in Leppard??? that would be really great don't you think?

They know that A LOT of there fans wan't to hear a really hard album from them. They should just do one heavy album and make Viv do crazy solos like the ones he did back in the day!!!

Completely wrong. 2 or 3? That's simply not true. Check the credits before you start making up crap like that. X has some great songs on it. "Torn To Shreds" is awesome and had no outside writers. I like the whole cd.

Def Leppard has been one of my favorites for a long time. Joe's voice may be shot for the high screeching stuff, but they are a talented bunch of guys.

When Vivian first joined the band, I also thought he would bring them back to a little more of a metal sound. At the NAMM show shortly after he joined, I went up to him. I told him that I hoped he would bring more of a hard edge back to the band. His response... "You know, I may just take them in the complete opposite direction." Now, many years later, it's obvious that he's not interested in playing metal or 80s hard rock.

Anyway, I'm not a big fan of their latest covers cd, but I'm looking forward to hearing the new cd they're working on.

+1 I just really got into them in the last few years. Back in the day, it was all just a blurr with all the metal and pop metal on MTV. They are great and Phil is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. Maybe that's the reason I have 3 PC1's?

I'm just glad I took the opportunity to see them (and a lot of other bands in their prime) in '82-83. I saw DL twice, and actually got sh*t from my rocker freinds that DL was a wuss band!
Am I wrong, or did Phil used to play Hamers? It looks like the Explorer shaped guitar on the Photograph vid has a Hamer headstock.
(Edit) Destroyer...the headstock looks similar to that Bass.

I think Phil played an Ibanez Destroyer Cygnus, Pete used to play a hamer. I think being the key words. LOL

I'm also kind of amazed that Viv plays down his time in Dio and kind of sneers at metal in general - it's not like he's now mr fusion or is in the most credible band of all time or anything. It amused me that they played Holy Diver while they changed the stage over though!!

Ok, from reading these threads I think we mostly agree after (Pyromania for me) Hysteria they got boring. End of story. They are on Classic Albums (Hysteria) on VH1C for those on EST.

                          uMMM...look at my forum name...lol

Def Leppard is one of the most underrated bands in rock history! Pyromania and Hysteria are masterpieces and although they have not been able to create a better studio album since those releases there have been some stellar standout tracks on the more recent discs.

I think the problem with Leppard is that they are too busy 2nd guessing themselves and trying to "fit in".

I think there is life left in the band and look forward to the next release!

But I do think High and Dry is one of the better 80's rock albums. I friggin' LOVE that album...

I'll say it again, for me Def Leppard died with they booted Pete Willis...

Phil did play an Ibanez Destroyer. Pete used a Gibson Explorer (not sure if he used Hamer or not). Rick Savage played Hamer basses.

Thanks, Toe. I'm kind of on a Hamer kick lately, after I found out why I like that Phantom so much....
