Riiiight... Tell that to Pete Townsend, Frank Zappa, Eric Johnson, George Harrison, Greg Allman, Jimi Hendrix, Tony Iommi, Alex Lifeson, Derek Trucks and Duane Allman.
Vivian was a great guitarist back in the day... I saw him live for Holy Diver twice, Last in Line and Sacred Heart... he was a great performer. I also saw his first tour with Whitesnake and while I didn't care for them, he did shred well.
Since then? Sorry. Nothing interesting.
And I know you can hate ACDC, and say what you will but come on... Some of you little kiddies are just too young... High Voltage to Back in Black? ACDC ruled the 70's with hard rock while Black Sabbath was considered the best at what they do, and comparing either of these cutting edge bands (for the time) against the music they opened the doors for in the 80's is just plain stupid.
And FWIW, Ozzy, Iron maiden and Judas Priest ruled heavy metal in the 80's... Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Poison, etc... those were GLAM METAL bands, not heavy metal.
From an interview with Campbell. The guy who's never managed to write a decent riff for Leppard yet.
Was it hard filling the shoes of Steve Clark?
Yes and no. On a musical level, no, not at all. On a personal level, yeah.
Those guys had never worked with anyone other than Steve.
How can someone be in a band over ten years and not know about someone like Pete Willis? And if it was so easy to replace Steve Clark musically how come Viv's never written a song like "Switch 625" or "Gods Of War", or a solo like the one in "Armageddon It"? How come he's done fuck all, in fact, if it was so easy?
Maybe it was just easy in terms of picking up a paycheck for doing jack shit. Dio knows what he's talking about - Viv's a tool.
I hate to burst all of your bubbles, but Vivian rules and always has. He is a way better guitar player than any of you will ever be. He is technically better than Iommi or Blackmore. Dio is one of the best singers ever, but he needs to pay up the money he scammed not just from Viv but from many other people during his now defunct career. Oh, and Def Leppard rules too. Pyromania is the second most perfect record EVER made, after Boston's first. Here's a little Viv for you to enjoy with some kind words from Ronnie James who. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCszTnkdN4w
Not to fork this thread one more time because, this thread hasn't gone all over the map already. Anyone find it funny that it was Neil Schon that probably kicked ass over all those guys? :ROTF:

I've always dug Viv's playing.
That said, how many of us have you heard? I'll be the first in line to cut heads with Vivian any day, and I know there are several others here who I would be confident in their abilities to hold their own as well. Making a comment like that shows what a douchebag tool you really are. Grow up, guitar playing is not a competition.
Vivian signed a contract with Dio and was paid occording to the terms of the contract. If his big ass chin obscured the "fine print" that's his Mommas fault, not Ronnies. Vivian is a whiny little bitch who should be rimming Dio for getting his faggy ass name mentioned in this thread....this is the extent of his celebrity.

His chin is definitely bigger than mine. He may be technically better than Iommi or Blackmore, but he has never been innovative, and never will be. Those guys were both incredibly innovative and came from a different school of playing than Viv. You are not comparing apples to apples.
I can only imagine what music you are into ... let me know if you are on of these:
1) thinks Nirvana was good
2) thinks no one is better than Hendrix even though 30 yrs have passed
3) thinks AC/DC is innovative
4) listens to jam bands
5) only listens to bands that are critically aclaimed but actually suck like REM, Radiohead, and Coldplay
6) thinks Clapton is God ..cause hes not
7) thinks John Mayer is guitar hero
8) loves Dave Mathews Band
Which one are you?
I mean..I can't possibly imagine what lame school of thought you fall into if you dont think Rock of Ages is one of the best rock anthems of all time.
That's some seriously funny shit.
I don't fall into any of those camps, and still can't stand Def Leppard. I don't hate them, but never liked them either, whether in their hard-rockin' "me and my wine" days or their modern saccharine pop mode. All forgettable tripe, and Rock of Ages is right up there with Love Bites, Rocket and Pour Some Sugar on Me on my "turn off the radio as soon as I hear the opening riff" list.
For a bit of a glimpse into where I come from, I'm as at home listening to Led Zep, Hendrix, Cream & The Eagles as I am listening to Dokken, Megadeth & Living Colour, or modern metal like Nevermore, Scar Symmetry, Opeth & Lamb of God. Plenty of jazz & blues in my cd collection too. So my tastes are pretty diverse & still can't bear Def Lep. Maybe it's because I'm not hung up on one era or genre that allows me see Def Lep in the right perspective. The blind & rampant fanboyism of a lot of Metallica & KISS fans leaves me bewildered too.
But dude, I'll never criticise your listening tastes for enjoying what you do. I'll also (hopefully) never come off as a sanctimonious git who assumes that anyone who doesn't like the same band that I do just doesn't have the musical education or intelligence to do so. But that's just me, I guess

Def Leppard considered themselves a cross-over group. They wanted to be the Michael Jackson of rock....so get over it already and give the band credit for writing very catchy upbeat rock songs.
I'd rather give credit to the Go-Go's. They wrote catchy upbeat rock songs. They're better looking too. Oh, and they have better guitar tones.
