  • Review: Van Halen at the Palace in Auburn Hills (2nd Detroit show)

I just got back from the Van Halen show at the palace. Let me start this off by saying that I was lucky enough to get free tickets for the 2004 show, and I thought the band was great. I was partying and throughly enjoyed the show. I thought the band was very good. Sunday night, as luck would have it, my manager sent out an Email that he had two suite tickets in Compuware's suite at the Palace available so I jumped on it... I was excited to say the least. Unfortunetly, tonight was a different story. I walked out during Eddie's "solo". More on that later... The good? DLR... His voice was great and he had twice the energy of the rest of the band put together. For the beginning of "Ice Cream Man", Dave came out with his guitar to tell a story and I'll tell you that even though I was at the other end of the arena, it felt like I was sitting around a campfire listening to Dave's tale of teenage parties and smoking pot in a blacklit basement. Great frontmen know how to turn a packed arena into small club. Also, how cool is it to see VH with Roth in front playing arguably their best material? That party rock stuff is what rock n roll is about... And VH invented that.

Unfortunately, the set was marred by timing issues and Eddie's subpar playing... For example, during I'm the One, Alex fell out of time right before the break and it was nearly a trainwreck. This happened a few other times as well. Eddie was definitely off. He struggled with quite a few songs, making mistakes during the verses, almost as if he forgot how to play them. The solos were spotty at best. To me, it appeared that Edward is back on the bottle... it was like he was in slow motion, and his energy wasn't there at all. His solo was a complete disaster, to the point were I was squirming in my seat... I was that uncomfortable. He struggled through Cathedral, then played a bit of Eruption stopping midway through the tremelo picked theme to slowly hammer aimlessly, then step on his wah and do whammy dives... basically make noise. I couldn't take it anymore... I motioned to my brother and we got the hell out of there. I was embarrassed and sad for him... what a shame. I hope it was just a bad show. Maybe it was me? I didn't drink a drop and I noticed around me that most people were boozing it up and seemed like they were enjoying themselves. Going in, I was skeptical... I haven't been blown away by the youtube clips that I've seen either. I wanted to be completely blown away and inspired by this concert and it wasn't even close... quite the opposite. I have NEVER seen a national level act play so poorly overall. As for Wolfie, I think he did a decent job. The kid is 16 and he has big shoes to fill. His backing vocals sounded great (I think there was a little studio magic going on but never the less...), and he played Mike's parts pretty faithfully.

Also, I think that the fact that this whole tour is a money driven affair puts me off. When you charge $100/ticket you had better bring your A game. What makes this worse for me is that Friday, I saw a local 80's band called Halloween in a small club near my house. Those guys show up, put up an elaborate graveyard stage set by themselves, then procede to get onstage and LEVEL the club for a crowd of maybe 50 people, then tear their set down, pack their gear and go home. Cover charge was $5 bucks... hell their drummer lives AND works in Ohio and drives up to Michigan to play. Too bad Van Halen doesn't have the same respect for the fans that made them what they are.

Instead of getting rid of Micheal Anthony, the management should get him back in there boot EVH and get Bart Walsh or Russ Parrish to fill in on guitar... that way you know you'll be in for a faithful reproduction of past VH rather than a shell of it.

I suppose I should mention the gear... Eddie played one of the new black Wolfgang's with a "4" stencil painted on it in grayfor most of the set, two Art Series Charvels (one was red, black, and white and the other was yellow with black stripes), and the Frankenstein. Wolfie played the blue and white striped bass, a black and yellow mini bass (during Little Guitars), and a black Gibson Thunderbird bass with white pickguard and EMG's.

What club? I'd like to see some good cheap shows. I'm in the Detroit area now and have no idea where to find any local talent

I couldn't afford VH tickets and from the sound of it I'm kind of glad.

I don't have anything recent, but here's some old vids from the 80's on the bass player's site. They kick ass live, and they are in their mid - late forties. Great guys that love playing for the sake of it. The band doesn't do the costume thing anymore, but they still do the stage. Every summer they go over to Europe and play festivals. I guess they have a strong following there.

I would've been pissed if I had to pay believe me.

Club wise, the IROCK, The Ritz, the Token Lounge, and Harpos are good places to start. I saw Halloween at a club that just opened in New Balitmore called New York New York. It is owned by the same owners of the Ritz. As a matter of fact, Halloween is playing this Friday at the Ritz in Warren. PM me for details...

Some good locals IMO are Slave to the Beautiful, the Unheard, Halloween, Seduce (another older 80's band that does gigs every blue moon. Actually, they were in the Decline of Western Civilization Part II) and Radiocraft (power pop but still very good).

AWESOME reveiew Steve!!! Maybe it's a blessing I didn't go, because I been pretty jazzed when I saw those new VH clips as well. I know how I felt when I saw George Lynch a few years back, and that really left a bad impression on me. I walked out too. I just didn't want to hear anymore..I loved that fucker's playing so much!! I'd hate to see Ed on a bad night!!! I saw him in '90 and I got the goosebumbs..

You're a credible source IMO, I believe every word you said. Cool to hear Dave is on his game..and Ed is too, maybe a bad night I hope. He kicked so much ass on other reviews and clips..so that fire is still in him. Maybe Lynch too, I haven't heard anything "great" from him in a while, but I'm sure it's in him...wishful thinking.

Steve..I'm want to send you something. We'll discuss it via PM you when I get the time. I've been wanting to do that for some time...along with other buds here that are Van Halen fanatics..

I saw both shows in Chicago last week, the 16th and 18th, and Eddie was great at both! No problems and the band seemed to really be enjoying playing those songs again. Could Ed have had an off night? Sure...but that doesn't mean he's back on the bottle.

I hope not. Maybe taking his son with him was also a tactic to keep him in check..other than the obvious money reason..

Hey, isn't Wolfie supposed to be in school??? ..

I dunno, I'm not making this stuff up. To me, Ed appeared drunk... either that or he was REALLY tired. Again, I haven't been too impressed with the youtube from this tour clips either. Compare the recent clips to this:

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Or even this for that matter:

Totally different player. If you want to see Van Halen, I suggest that you download the US Festival clips from 1983 rather than forking over $150 for a half baked rendition. Unless, you're there to see DLR. He delivers the goods.

Yeah I have both of those tapes collecting mold in the basement..I put the '83 one on a few weeks ago..it didn't even play..

That was the show we studied when we were doing out thing..so I watched that one about 100 times..

They second clip was from the Balance tour right..I bought a bought a bunch of crappy bootlegs at that time.

I agree He doesn't look as sharp in recent clip as those..but I wrote that off as "age"..After seeing the Namm '07 and other trainwrecks on youtube..just seeing he was able to pull off the old stuff again made me happy. I'd never think he would do it..

maybe next time you need to get hammered buddy... and relax and feel the groove like everyone else.... it's rock'n'roll after all not a clean-playing contest

I'm sure if I was partying like I was in '04 I would have enjoyed it more. I can't say there weren't a few (very frew) magical moments, but overall it wasn't good. I was there to see one of if not the most influencial guitarist ever do his thing... I wanted to be schooled. I wanted to remember every note.

I realize seeing Van Halen isn't like going to a Dream Theater concert, but Eddie was bad... I'll will guarantee you that holmes was drunk, especially since eveybody else says that he's been so amazing on this tour.

Either that or everybody that says that was drunk themselves.

I was there at the UC on the 18th and I have to agree. It was a great show.

In regards to the background vocals I think it's one of or any combination of 3 things:
                              • Wolfgang is closer to MA's range than everyone thought
                              • Eddie is more part of the background formula than people give him credit for
                              • There was some samplin' goin' on.
Either way, I walked into the show with a smile on my face and walked out the same way.
