I knew there was a reason I have always hated Kiss! I mean, sure they have a few rocking classics, but they're definitely the anti Thin Lizzy. (and if you ever fell under their spell, you have my sympathies. If you still like Kiss, you go alone.)

Thin Lizzy is one of those happy accidents where hooks meet chops and style and make beautiful babies.

i agree. the musicianship was just so much better up through 1989. then the playing as well as the recording format changed for the worse. talent has been traded for players who can play faster or "heavier" and the kids these days call that better - wrong!

at the van halen concert i saw a bumper sticker that said:
"It's not that we're old, your music really does just suck!"

Thin Lizzy is one of the greatest bands ever. they've got that thing that all the newer bands dont... listening to them just makes you feel good.

I'd have to say that 78'-87' were the best years. After that, things got way too overproduced and whatnot.

I was fortunate enough to be turned on to Thin Lizzy, at a fairly early age. My godfather worked at a department store, and gave me a promo copy of Live and Dangerous. I played the shit out of that album! Still one of my favorites, and jumped at the chance to buy it on disc, when my turntable needle went bust. Massacre has to be my favorite song. Oddly, I like the live versions much better than the studio cuts. Seems like the studio didn't capture the energy of the band.

Speaking of Thin Lizzy, has anyone heard Dragonlord (Eric Peterson's black metal project) do the cover of Emerald on their second CD Black Wings of Destiny? What a great cover, and Eric actually sings very well on it and not in his normal cookie monster/shriek vocal style!

I think the major diff between old and new is that old is real and raw. They weren't a bunch of pretty boys. Bon was no friggin monster, but you knew he was gonna go down with a fight, and bust some teeth. I don't think that can be said about most of the new stuff. So much of it is pre-packaged angst. I really like to look at who is sponsoring what upcoming concert tours, it really say alot about the band and the target audience. You'd get, say, Guns and Roses, sponsered by a beer company, and somone like Britney Spears used to be sponsered by, like Pop Tarts! God only know what friggin Hannah Monana is being sponsered by: Milk?!!!

dude there are plenty of good new bands. but non of them are getting the commercial attention that they should because of a lot of the things listed in previous strings of this thread.

for all us old farts there are still underground newer bands that have the same ideals as the bands we grew up listening to. our label Cruz Del Sur Music has a few of them. check out Icarus Witch, Slough Fed, and my band Widow. also bands like Twisted Tower Dire and Viper that are really kicking ass the right way.

actually, I dont care what you listen to, as long as I dont have to listen to it.

Arch Enemy is very good, musically, that's about it for those 2 bands, I guess that Rupe guy from COB is a cool guy, and WAY better than Alexi though

I think its a number of factors.

Current popular music seems not to have the melody of the older stuff. It seems more "open" and atonal at times. Lack of "groove" or a "hook." I think this MIGHT BE because its easier for younger kids to write this way. They don't have to know some of the rules of harmony and melody and music so they can come out with more songs faster and make the labels more money.

I think the music business pushes this kind of thing. Make as much money as fast as you can and forget about developing talent and putting money into that talent.

If you can dumb down the audience so that they don't really have an appetite for real musicians and really good music you can come out with more bands, more songs and hence make more money off of popular trendy crap.

I think most of the current bands coming out are just following the trends - which right now is angry screaming crap or rap for the most part.

There's tons of melody and groove if you look for it. I don't have a problem finding good stuff out there.

COB is pretty melodic. If you don't like their stuff, check out Alexi's other band Sinergy. They've got 3 albums out (a fourth has been in the works for quite some time, but keeps getting pushed back). The singer is Alexi's ex-wife, Kim Goss, and she's like the female version of Bruce Dickinson... awesome voice for sure!

Music has changed in the sense of presentation (speaking of concerts) and lyrically. The concerts during the late 70's and 80's were not only about the music, but also the whole concert experience was a big disneyland party.
                              A big FUN party.
Today, everybody is political, religious, philosophical and above all ANGRY and anti everything.
These artists/bands that meet this profile have no live show worth attending. No stellar drum solo, guitar solo, bass solo, no light or laser show. Why? Because they aren't true musicians, they don't have such skills.
They have a reputation of their angry lyrics and anti everything they have to live up to. So, thats what you get when you go to one of their shows. 90 minutes of anger. Nothing wrong with being angry or frustrated,
I just don't want to make a living at it.

The late 70's and 80's was about fun.
This era doesn't know fun or their fun is a different type of fun altogether.
Their energy is different in comparision to the 70's and 80's bands.
The 70's and 80's bands you could tell were having fun performing.
Today, one can't tell if they're having fun or not. Not sure what vibe the band is into.
Very distracting to say the least.

It least as much as I didn't really care for Panteras singers.
You knew Dimebag was having a good time performing.
He smiled frequently throughout his performance and got into it.
You can ALWAYS tell when someone or band is having fun while performing
                              it will ALWAYS show.

The days of the frontman are gone.
Whether he was the bass player, guitar player or just the lead singer only.
A specific personality had to command the stage and interract and keep the audience into it. Today, bands lack badly in this area.
In general, alot is lost and removed from todays concerts.

You can call it old farts or whatever, but I'm not gonna pay 35.50 plus,
to see a musical extension of ones anti everything and anger.
I don't value that approach and presentation of music.
As far as concerts are concerned, I'm about being light hearted, chilling out, relaxing, kicking back and enjoying and taking in the whole experience. You know, fun stuff man thats good for the soul. I don't see that in todays concerts/bands, I did in the late 70's and 80's.
