You are going to love what you grew up with, it's just the way it is. I personally hate AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, etc. can't stand it.. Not even a minute of it. To me, it's a whole other world of music compared to Lamb of God, KSE, Gojira, etc. I love to be able to listen to music and be impressed by the playing. I've never been one for conservative rock.

Like ive said before...take out the vocals in every band you mention...
and the music is pretty good! Ah...youth... Remember this
from an old fart though...if KSE, and Gojira are truly talented...then their
music will still be popular in 20 years.. I would bet that they will be forgotten in 5! Like Aerosmith... great songs last!

Mr. Burns, I think a good course on marketing may do you some good. I respect what you have to say, just disagree with it. I don't think talent is measured in money or longevity.

Let's remember, that kids who grew up loving the beatles didn't transistion easily to Metallica later, and People who group up loving Aerosmith won't transition to this era's music easily.

Um, I grew up listening to the Beatles, and loved Metallica.......until "And Justice..." And I never really cared for Aerosmith, yet, I STILL don't dig alot of today's bands, cause much of it is just the same boring, rehashed "ooh, I'm so f#$*ing bad!" mentality. Today's so-called "metal" is heading down the same path of the late 80s metal bands - Cookie cutting, where bands no longer stand apart from each other. They just all seem to do the same, boring thing. Alot of those older bands mentioned, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Thin Lizzy, they all made names for themselves and lasted because they created a "sound", a niche for themselves. When Bon Scott sang, you knew who it was, same with Angus's playing, same with Phil Lynott's vocals, or Stephen Tyler, etc. Fast forward to the late 80s, and you had all these bands wearing the same clothes, playing the same guitars, singing the same songs, alot of posturing. Alot of that applies to many of the bands, today.
Do I like the music I grew up around? A good bit of it, yeah. But I also dig newer stuff, when it gives me just cause to like it. Sadly, not much of it, has.

They all rocked hard.... I miss those days. I lived in Germany (Airforce Brat) from 1979 to 1984, I was 16 when I arrived there! All the Beer I could drink (I was Legal there) lots of Ha$# going around and a great concert every week! I actually went to three Ozzy shows in the span of 8 days because the country is so small in size.... I loved it! Best time of my life!

What impresses you about the playing? Because the playing hasn't changed! If it's speed you want, we had it in the 80's, The hardcore stuff my 20 year old son listens to today is just too busy, I can't hear the style or hook, it's either full on hardcore or nothing... Growling isn't helping the song either. He likes a band called "Otep", I felt that this was an unusual band because it had a female singer growling as well, I don't know I guess it's a progression Beatles.... Thinlizzy..... Metallica...... Lamb of God..... ?? Whats next? can it get faster and the vocals get even more difficult to understand?

I think people expect certain types of music to come back and sound exactly like it used to, but that will never happen. Things change...

                      Face it, we're all old...

Interesting thread. The way I look at it is based on my personal experiences is that if the music is good music to YOUR ears who gives a fuck ? Tastes can change and as one matures they can find go back and revisit stuff they thought sucked. When I first started on guitar I looked at it from two different camps...pre VH and post VH. At the time I didnt give much respect for the pre-VH players...fast forward a few more years...watching Austin City limit with SRV. Although I htought the songs from SRV on MTV and the radio were alright but seeing that show and what SRV put into every note live instantly gave him the respect as a palyer he deserves....still get goose bumps whenever I see that show

On the same token I've went back and listened to shit I thought was totally bad-ass at the time only to think its garbage today. It can go both ways.

I dont understand why people get so bent out of shape if someone thinks their idol sucks...its your idol ..not theirs I'm more into classically influenced stuff...Randy Rhoads, Yngwie etc and all honesty the Hendrix pentatonic type of playing is boring to ME...no need to flame me, its my opinion. I dont care if you dont like Rhoads or Malmsteen...there's enough love to go around for everyone so no need to get defensive if I think cookie-monster-high on H- vocals bands suck ass...just cant get past the vocal. I know I miss out on some kick-ass guitar playing but a distinguished melody in a vocal line is a must for me..

I also do Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi, et al would *laugh* some of the shit called music today.

I don't care less if there's one power chord in the song... if the tune is great and has a hook then it's all good... that's what matters...
If you are talking about TZ, then it's far from simplicity... they made brilliant and memoriable chord progressions not mindless chugga chugga riffing in every place... impressive guitar work... Gary Moore and John Sykes are pretty much as good as it gets... the amount of fire, feel, tone and passion they have is pretty unmatched

                                4 chords?
How about "Immigrant Song" or "Wanton Song" by Zep with ONE chord verses?
