        exactly, what next level?

the next level up from the mighty Sykes level is something that human beings are not capable of doing, you have to go to some other planet to discover such talent

I think he means he should have had the same level of commercial success in his own right as his songs did for Coverdale in Whitesnake - and I can agree with that assessment. WE know who Sykes is because we are guitar nerds.

But lots of people who loved that Whitesnake album still don't know that Sykes was the writer and guitar player on that album, becuase he wasn't in the videos. The people who think Adrian Vandenberg and Vivian Campbell played on that album.

Blue Murder should have been bigger, but the songs were kind of plodding and I don't think Carmine was at his best. Valley of the Kings as the MTV leadoff video was a big mistake IMO. The second album was much better but by then they got the perception of "2 albums, no hits" and there went their shot. Good thing it wasn't like that when Whitesnake started, Coverdale got to make a bunch of albums before his big hit.

The songs and the production were fucking great on the first Blue Murder album, John was at his prime and Carmine was fucking great. I have tons of bootlegs from their tours and he fucking destroyed. Not to mention Tony Franklin who is allways brings his A game.

John Kalodner was 100% behind that album but Geffen had bunch of new people who had never even met David Geffen and didn't know shit about rock'n'roll, the promotion was big fucking zero. If such dude as Kalodner can't make the record company to take the album serious... no one can.
